However, religion continues to be a major cause of conflicts and wars--of almost all the conflicts and wars taking place in our own time. Some thinkers believe that the situation will be worse in the coming millennium. Organized religions will assist the cause of wars that will result in dramatic bloody conflicts. Individuals seeking power will use religion as an excuse to satisfy their private ends. The issues of war and peace will cease to be but mere abstractions. We will explore the structure of religion and suggest ways of understanding that can limit the use of religion in service to warring Ph.D: author of numerous articles and books on Late Second Temple Jewish life and thought: founder, Ethiopian National Literacy Campaign, currently, international Chairman, Board of Peace and Development for Ethiopia and the horn of Africa, and President Yemenite Jewish Federation of America.

Does religion really promote violence and feelings of exclusion? This presentation will focus on the approach of religion to violence with particular reference to Islam. It will also examine how religion overcomes the phenomenon of terrorism. Dr. Azmi taught World Civilizations and Islamic Culture and thought in India and the United States. He has participated in numerous international seminars and conferences, and has written and edited extensively in both Urdu and English

2:00 PM–2:45 PM IN COMMERCE 2.57 AIDS- Our Response to the World's Worst Disaster Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan, F.R.C.O.G. AIDS has been described in many ways: the worst plague ever the nastiest microbe: the greatest challenge facing the African continent. In this lecture, the presenter will explore ways in which South Africans have been addressing this challenge through the "Education for Life" programme. This lecture will also describe how the AIDS crisis has provided a special moment in "salvation history". Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan is a member of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa since 1958. She is a Medical Doctor who is the Founder of the Education for Life AIDS prevention program in South Africa. She is also a member of the Uganda AIDS commission, which is the Government's commission for advice and policy making in all aspects of prevention care and research.
2:00 PM 2:45 PM IN ENGINEERING 3.44 Soteriological Humility: The Christological Significance of the Humanity of Jesus in the Encounter of Religions Dr. James W. Perkinson In the context of a global community, irreligious practice increasingly invests time in (regional) violent conflict. Recasting religious identity so that neither loyalty nor toleration are compromised emerges as a paramount task in solving such conflicts. Dr. Perkinson emphasizes in his lecture that interreligious encounter can no longer be considered merely an exercise in mutual enrichment but as a mutual soteriological search. James W. Perkinson holds a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Chicago, his studies focus on questions of race, class and gender. He spent 15 years as an activist with an inner city Christian community in Detroit and currently teaches world religions, social ethics and theology at Ecumenical Theological Seminary and Marygrove College

2:00 PM–3:00 PM IN ENGINEERING 3.56 Forgiveness in Action - Interreligious Perspectives on the work of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission Canon Chris Chivers The aim of the lecture is to examine how religious and psychological perspectives on forgiveness gave shape to the work of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Canon Chivers will also explore to what extent such perspectives were handled with integrity with respect to the religious or secular traditions from which they came. Chris Chivers is a priest of the C.PSA, and is a Canon Precentor of St. George's Cathedral. A graduate in music from Oxford University (U.K.) and in Theology from Cambridge University (UK), 1999 has the publication of his first book Echoes from a Rainbow Song and his name as one of the top ten preachers in the UK's Times Preacher of the Year Competition
Ms. Jan Arnow Learn how to create a riveting bus program that will show adults in their own neighbourhoods the violent influences to which their children are exposed on a daily basis. Participants will learn why our children have learned to hate by the time they reach the age of five, what the root causes of violence are that keep them at risk, and most importantly, what adults can do to change this situation. All participants will receive handouts that correspond to each stop on the tour. This program is being implemented in various parts of the United States and in several other countries. Jan Arnow an internationally recognized authority on multicultural education, violence abatement, prejudice reduction, and ethnic traditions is a highly respected and award-winning author of six books and scores of articles for a variety of national magazines. She is currently working on violence and aggression in youth; internationwide rollout of a traveling No More Violence tour bus, several books including a volume connecting violence and values, and a collection of conversations with drug-addicted children and their parents
2:00 PM–3:00 PM IN ENGINEERING 1.22 The Peace Programme: Nurturing the Spirit of the Child Ms. Samantha Streak The Peace Programme was developed to ensure that children are empowered with the tools to live peace in their lives. This lecture will describe this project, and relate aspects of it that have been integrated successfully into classrooms.
