Charmaine Mandell; Ms. Alycia Forbes
Ms. Mandell is an acclaimed author and lecturer that addresses international nightmares: child abuse and substance abuse. Her recent publication, Remember Tomorrow: A Woman's Companion, offers loving and supportive avenues for building self-esteem set at an English 8th grade reading level. Religious communities now distribute this book in U.S. women's correctional facilities, universities, prisons, community conferences, and women's studies programs. Washington State government lists this book as the only suggested reading for all foster parents in the state. The widespread distribution of this book provides a necessary communication link that facilitates ministry contact with members of congregations dealing with family problems. This reading is a key to reducing violence in societies by emphasizing preventive measures in the home. The author will read excerpts from the book, followed by questions and answers. This program is sponsored by the Institute for World Spirituality.
Charmaine Mandell will be the keynote speaker at the International Women's Day United States/Mexico Border Conference, 3/8/2000. An author on a mission - reaching into the hearts of women, offering avenues for rebuilding self-esteem-15 years, foster parent for children of substance abuse and incarcerated mothers.
Alycia Forbes lives by her motto, "singing through life, creatively free." Alycia's use of various international instruments and her angelic voice cross language barriers and touches the hearts of many. She is currently working on a CD release, as well as a music special for MTV.

Empowerment of Women in the Townships

Ms. Coetzee will offer a slide presentation and discussion on the empowerment of women in the previously disadvantaged communities and townships of South Africa. Topics covered and discussed include: women being taught to be
entreprenuers; women learning business management and sewing skills in order to be self-sufficient; and a pilot project for 100 satellites to follow in townships across South Africa. No biographical statement available at time of printing.

Ms. Abdia Naidoo
Mrs. Abdia Naidoo will share with participants her observations from working with HIV and AIDS patients over the past six years. Her work has led her to develop the 6 C's: Counseling, Consent. Confidentiality, Care, Concern and Commitment. Abdia Naidoo has worked with HIV positive persons with AIDS for the past six years. A trained counselor and Community Health Nurse, she is involved with programme development on AIDS and related issues.

This lecture will argue that the divergence between science and religion in the modern period has caused untold harm to modern society. The stubborn persistence of poverty, crime and war during a period of wealth generation on a scale undreamed of in the past - is due largely to our collective inability to bring fundamental religious principles to bear in the face of a rapidly advancing technology.

Dr. Sarracino has been a member of the Bahá'i faith since 1968. One of his primary areas of interest has been the harmony of science and religion, and its implications for the overall progress of society. He has a Ph.D. in Physics (General Relativity) from the University of Victoria, Canada, and did postdoctoral work in Astrophysics at New Mexico Tech. and Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland.

Mrs. Annelie Franken
This lecture is an introduction to the Sekem organization's project Human Encounter as Sacrament of the Future: Biodynamic Agriculture, Sacrament of the Soil. The organization Sekem has fostered a sacred encounter of man, earth, art, science and religion. Mrs. Franken, the lecturer, will show how Sekem's gift to humanity can be spread throughout the world. Mrs. Franken studied art and design, pioneered the Design Department at PTA University. Co-Founded the PTA Waldorf School on the Bio Dynamic Farm. Taught and trained teachers for 24 years. Started support work and design for Sekem in 1996.

Ms. Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer
This presentation explores why citizens voices must be strengthened and have more influence, and develops a strategy for engaging millions of Americans in the debate over the future of Social Security. The presentation will also highlight how America Speaks, organized in all 50 US states, engages elected officials to listen to citizens. Particular attention will be given to how the project integrated face-to-face dialogue and technology, and will explore with participants how they could replicate this model around the world.
Ms. Lukensmeyer has worked in the fields of social change and institutional renewal for over thirty years, in all sectors-corporate, government not for profit, religious, and education. She is a passionate advocate of participatory democracy and has created innovative ways of integrating face to face dialogue and technology enabling thousands of citizens to participate in the decisions that impact their lives.

The Khumbula Healing Centre is an initiative of ex-political prisoners, activists, and former exiles that applies past experiences to the task of nation-building. The process has five objectives: 1. healing and reconciliation; 2. writing of history from the perspectives of ordinary persons; 3. erection of monuments and memorial parks; 4. exhumation and reburial of those who fell outside South Africa; 5. empowerment of youth and women.
