night, etc. All these summarisc the very norms of Jaina Ethics of which the details may be found in certain vows and the eleven Pratimās.1 Most of them share in character with the orthodox Hindu and Buddhist rules of lifc cxccpt probably the duties which prescribe a Srāvaka to have faith in his own rcligion, to do Sāmāyika (meditation during one Muhūrta) and to keep certain fasts, to limit his indispensible necessities of life and to abandon part by part worldly occupations as a preparatory to the inonk's life.
Another characteristic of the Jaina Religion is its constituent division of the Srāvakas "hearers” or lay disciples and Yatis or Monks, who should hold no property and never quit their dwelling except to beg for food. The Yati's life is one of utter abstinence, taciturnity and continence. He has to sweep the ground before sitting, rein in silent and stcady at one place at night and not to ride any ve'ricle for travelling. He is allowed, in turn, to dispense with all a:ts of worship, whilst the Srāvaka has to add to the ob ervance of the religious and moral duties the worship of the Tirthamkaras and a profound reverence 10 be shown to his more pious brethren. The secular Jain like the ascetic must practise the four virtucs, --libcrality, gentleness, picty and penance? : he should govern his mind, tongue and acts; abstain, at certain seasons, from salt, flower, green fruits, honcy, grapes, tobacco; drink water thrice strained, and never Icave a liquid uncovered lest an insect should be drowned in it; it is his duty also to visit daily a temple, where some of the images
