________________ PREFACE Rasâbhâsa, Bhâvâbhâsa, Guņa, Dosha, Alankâras, and varieties of composition, Nâțaka and its Sandhis, all find their due place in the work. The scheme of ordinary metres is explained and illustrated. The variety of types introduced will, it is hoped, facilitate the work of students. The etymological and philological portions as well as other particulars of minor importance and those concerning a comparative treatment of Indo-Aryan Vernaculars are printed in small types and may be omitted by those who do not care to learn them. Portions printed in medial types may be omitted by those who do not choose to learn minute particulars. The variety of types is thus meant to suit the requirements of different grades of students. The list of books consulted is appended hereto. My thanks are due to Mr. Amirmia Hamdumia, once my Assistant, now serving in the Mahâlakshmi Training College for Women, Ahmedâbâd, for the valuable help he has given me in regard to words of Persian and Arabic origin. It is hoped that this volume will satisfy the long-felt desideratum of a scholarly grammar of the Gujarati language. Havâdiâ-Chakalâ, Surat) November 1919 K. P. TRIVEDI
