Grammar, in general, has certain features. It analysed the language into verbal and nominal bases. It includes Paribhāṣā categorised as Dhātupātha the exhaustive lists of primitive verbal roots and Gaņapātha the selective list of nouns, verbs and so on for application in rules. A further feature of grammar is a set of Paribhāsas (metarules)- prescribing the order in which to apply the rules, where exceptions are to be made and so forth. Unādisütras provide rules for introducing affixes after verbal roots to derive nominal bases. These Sūtras are supposed to represent a development of analysis over a long period. The authorship of these Sütras is attributed to sākatāyana, instead of Pāṇini. Phitsūtras are a set of ancillary sūtras, providing principles of accentuation. A feature of these rules is that accents are presupposed for nominal bases, from which the rules derive revisions of accentuation for the whole of which those bases form a part. Liñgānuśāsana rules regulate genders, specifying how to determine the gender of linguistic items based on their structure and meaning.
Before presenting the details of the works and commentaries by scholars of Jaina tradition, a few words about the scheme of their treatment will be in order. The contribution of Jaina tradition is broadly divided into Sanskrit Grammar and Prakrit Grammar.
The works on Sanskrit grammar are again classified as: [1] Jaina works and their commentaries, [2] Commentaries on non-Jaina works, (3) Works on Khilpātha, Auktika works [4] Jaina works in Vernacular languages. Again, the Jaina works and their commentaries are treated as: {1} Prominent Jaina works,
(2) Minor Jaina works including other Jaina works with incomplete information. Likewise, the Jaina commentaries on non-Jaina works are grouped as those on well-known works and minor works. The Auktika works and those on the part of grammar such as Dhātupatha, Ganapātha etc. are also treated separately. The commentaries on Sabdānušāsana of Hemacandra and its allied literature are enormous. Therefore, after furnishing details of the auto-commentaries on text
