knowledge (Samyak Jñāna) and right conduct (Samyak caritra). He should be always vigilant for doing right works. Kinds of Charity -
There are ten types of charity''
1) Anukampādāna (Kindness - based charity) - The charity which is given with a view to favouring some poor and distressed is known as Anukampādāna.
2) Sangrahadāna (Emergency help-based charity) - The charity offered to somebody in order to get some help (as return) at the time of emergency is named as Sangrahadāna. The selfishness of the person giving charity lies in it. So it does not cause his liberation.
3) Bhayadāna (Fearfulness - based charity) - The charity given due to fear from king, minister, priest, giant (Rākṣasa) demon (Piśāca) etc. is known as Bhayadāna.
4) Kāruṇyadāna (Mercy - based charity)- The charity given after being merciful at the time of the death of some near and dear one is addressed as Kārunyadāna).
5) Lajjādāna (Shamefulness - based charity) - A man sitting in a meeting being participated by several persons of various status, gives charity to some needy person, in case of being requested by him, so that people do not consider him a miser. Because this sort of charity is given due to shamefulness, it is known as Lajjādāna.
6) Gauravadāna (Glory-based Charity) - The charity which is offered in order to attain name and fame, is known as Gauravadāha.
7) Adharmadāna (Irreligiousness - based charity) - The charity given to those persons who are busy in violence, false-speaking, stealing etc. is known as Adharmadāna. This type of charity favours irreligiousness, not religiousness, and indirectly promotes violence.
8) Dharmadāna (Religiousness - based charity) · The charity offered for the cause of religion is known as Dharmdāna. This type of charity is given particularly to those saints and seers for whom gold and ashes have the same value.
