________________ INTRODUCTION 11 Sandhi LXXIV. The Last Battle. Rāvaņa started for a final show-down with Rāma. Seeing ill-omens Mandodari tried to dissuade him, but to no avail. Description of Rāvaņa going to the battle-field. Lakşmaņa and others on the opposite side were all prepared. A very fierce fighting ensued. Descriptions of the dust raised, of the heroic deeds of the fighting warriors. Sandhi LXXV. The Fall of Rāvaņa. Mrga worsted Hanumat, Bhāmandala, Sugrīva and Vibhişaña in successive encounters. Rāma pushed back Mrga. Rāvana intervened. Their fighting continued incessantly for seven days, when Lakşmaņa interventd. Rāvana used Bahurupiņi which endlessly multiplied his form and renewed amputated limbs. After ten days' incessant battle Rāvana threw the most powerful Cakra at Lakşmeina. The Cakra, instead of killng, acknowledged him as its master. Struck with the same Cakra by Lakşmaņa, Rāvana fell dead. Sandhi LXXVI. Grief of Rāvana's Family. Laments of Vibhīşaņa, of Mandodarī and other queens, of Kumbhakarņa, Indrajit etc. Sandhi LXXVII. Rāvana's Cremation. Rāma consoled Vibhīşaņa. Funeral pyre was prepared. Rāyaṇa's body was laid thereon. The pyre was lighted. Description of the burning pyre. Rāvana's relatives performed obsequies. Rāma affirmed his trust in Vibhīşaņa. UTTARA-KANDA Sandhi LXXVIII. Reunion with Sītā. Triumhhal Entry into Lańkā. Departure for Ayodhyā. On hearing Monk Aprameyabala's impressive sermon on the all-devouring and inescapable Kāla, Indrajit, Ghanavāhana, Mrga, Kumbhakarņa, Mārīci, Mandodari and others took ordination. At the instance of Vibhīşaņa, Rāma met Şītā and received her with great feeling and admiration. Description of the triumphal entry into Lankā. Rāma sang a hymn at the Sāntinātha temple. Vibhişaņa was crowned king of Lankā. All the princesses Rāma and Lakşmaņa had acquired on their way from Ayodhyā came over to Lankā. Rāma spent there six years.
