________________ DR PIYARE L JAIN PARTICLE PHYSICIST OF INTERNATIONAL REPUTE DISCOVERS EVIDENCE OF NEW FORM OF MATTER Buffalo, NY. Scientists once thought atoms were the smallest building blocks of matter. It was discovered later that atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons; then, physicists decided, the protons and neutrons of an atomic nucleus were made up of still smaller particles, down to the quark. The best that physicists may be able to hope for is evidence that quarks exist in a free state known as quark-gluon plasma, a new elemental form of matter. Now Dr Piyare L Jain, professor of physics, state university of New York at Buffalo, has discovered one piece of evidence for the existence of such a plasma. The discovery by Dr Jain was accomplished through experiments performed by an international group of over 400 physicists from 20 nations and 80 institutions in the particle accelerator at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. THe experiments have implications for understanding how the origin of the Universe occurred. Physicists have proposed that a Big Bang occurred during the first few seconds of the origin of the Universe. "During the Big Bang, the temperature was very high for a short time, measured in microseconds", Dr Jain said. "All quarks and gluons were produced at that time in an expanded state. As they cooled, the quarks became frozen into neutrons, protons and other strongly interactive particles." Dr Jain calculated the energy density of up to 500 particles in each head-on collision created by the heavy ion and recorded in the nuclear emulsion. He then concluded that the higher energy density of the particles after collision may be an indication of the new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma. Dr Piyare L Jain has done extensive accelerators at Cornel, Stanford, Brookhaven Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories. experiments at particle National, Ferm National and AHIMSA: NON VIOLENCE DOCUMENTARY MAKES INTO PEACE IMPERATIVES 1988 Mississauga, On. The north American documentary, Ahimsa, was a very successful feature presentations at the weeklong celebrations of Peace Imperatives 1988 organised and held at the west campus of the University of Toronto. The documentary which explores the traditions of Jain Religion and its peace loving extraordinary followers in India has tried to examine Jain Religion, being one of the oldest and most subtle religions of the world. The message of Ahimsa and Peace as preached and practised by Tirthankaras, Lord Rishab to Lord Mahavir, from the past immemorial historical ages to the present are of paramount importance even today. This is amply displayed by the screening of the documentary, Ahimsa, during the Peace Imperatives 1988 The documentary in its making was assisted by the Jain Federation of North America and many Jain institutions and individuals in India. Prof. Padmanabh Jaini of University of california was its consultant. Jain Education International 2010_02 For Private & Personal Use Only 8 www.jainelibrary.org
