FORUM The Jain festivals, known as Parvas, more importantly the birth days of the Tirthankaras and Dasha-Paryushan, are all observed on the dates established according to Vir Samvatsar ( V.S.), the Jain calendar that constituted with the Nirvan of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara, 2512 years ago this past October. Jain communities of Canada and USA, established and grown a decade and a half ago, observe and celebrate all important Parvas. Birth festivities of the Tirthankaras are usually observed on the weekends close to the days observed in India. The variation in dates to observe the Parvas, in north America, is due to the vicissitudes of social and geographic limitations that the Jains have been catapulted into. As Jain settlers are recent to arrive on the continent, the social limitation is varied and many. The geographical vastness of the chosen land has put limit on the density of the Jain demography which is highly educated and professional in nature with a high ratio. Thus it has conduced the concentration of the Jains in industrialised urban centres of north America. The variations in dates of the observance of Dash-Paryushan Parva, in India, by Jains follow groups. Some observe during Shravan vada baras to Bhadra shud choth; some do from Shravan vada teras to Bhadra shud panchami and others celebrate from Bhadra shud panchami to Bhadra shud chadas. The Jaina communities of north America, at large, have followed the variations of Indian observances and have utterly failed to adopt necessary steps to replant the roots of the Jain heritage in the new land. The Jain community of north Carolina, a southern state in America, has taken a first step in advancing the unity of the Jains as one by deciding to celebrate Dasha-Paryuhsan Parva on the dates different from India's observance, to the similar adoptions of celebrating Tirthankara birth days. North Carolina Jain community celebrated Dasha-Paryushan from sept 10 to Sunday 18,1988 during the two weekends. On the 1st weekend, we began Dash-Paryushan along with two virtues followed next day by Mahavir's conception and dreams ceremonies. The next six virtues, one on each day, were celebrated. On the Saturday of the second weekend, samvatsari Pratikraman Kshamapan plus the last two virtues were observed. Recognition of Tapasvis and Parana were conducted on Sunday, 18 September. The reasons for change from India's observance dates are: 1 The youth, children and working adult will have a solid provision to participate fully in all 3 significantly important days in the weekend 2 - Kshamapan (samvatsari) on Saturday provides an ideal circumstance for all to observe Samvatsari pratikraman together and to seek kshamapan individually 3- The final day of Dash-Paryushan Parva on Sunday will provide an opportunity for congregational recognition of the tapasvis and the Parana 2010_02 For Privcontinues adrepage 10 Page #3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ JAIN DIGEST Quarterly News Magazine engaged in the promotion of Jain Religion and its doctrines Ahimsa, Vegetarianism & Peace JAIN DIGEST 4665 Moccasin Trail Mississauga, Ontario Canada L4Z 2W5 EDITOR S.A.Bhuvanendra Kumar Promotion & Publicity Pramod Jhaveri Jain Federation Officers Dr T.J.Salgia - President Dr Manilal Mehta - 1st V.P Dinesh Chheda - V.P. Body, house, wealth and wife, sons and friends and enemies - all are different from the soul; Only the fool calls them his own. From all directions come the birds and rest together in the trees; but in the morning each goes his own way. flying in all directions. Death is not for me. Why then should I fear ? Disease is not for me. Why then should I despair ? I am not a child, nor a youth, nor an old man All these states are only of my body. Time and again in my foolishness I have enjoyed all kinds of body and have discarded. Now I am wise ! Why should I long for dross ? The soul is one thing, matter another - that is the quintessence of truth. Whatever else may be said is merely its elaboration. - Prof. S.A.Srimandhar Kumar Bangalore, India. 2010_02 Page #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ MAHAVIR NIRVAN AND BEGINNING OF VIR SAMVAT THE JAIN NEW YEAR 2514 CELEBRATIONS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA The Jain Calendar, Vir Samvat, began 2514 years ago the day after the Nirvan of Lord Mahavir, who attained the final stage of freedom from the cycle of transmigration. JAIN ETHICS AND ETIQUETTE The ethico-spiritual essence of Jain Religion substantiates the notion of self without overlooking the loftiest mystical heights ... The basis of socio-spiritual ethics, in Jainism, is Ahimsa, the love and respect for life ... The socio-economic equality and mental equanimity of Jainism is samata ... The development of sensibility to sense sufferings is karuna.Compassion and kindness are the creative expression of karuna. The depth of kindness is the criterion of the spiritually evolved souls. The value of Ahimsa, Samata and Karuna are of prime importance in Jainism, and these values colour the Jaina outlook with democratic flavour. Social freedom, socio-economic equality, welfare of all beings and ethico-spiritual secularism and equality of sexes form the foundation of democratic setup, and thus Jain philosophy subscribes to the development of democratic social conscious. - Dr K.C. Sogani Editorial, Third International Jain Conf. February 1985, Delhi, India 2010_02 Page #9 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ DR PIYARE L JAIN PARTICLE PHYSICIST OF INTERNATIONAL REPUTE DISCOVERS EVIDENCE OF NEW FORM OF MATTER Buffalo, NY. Scientists once thought atoms were the smallest building blocks of matter. It was discovered later that atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons; then, physicists decided, the protons and neutrons of an atomic nucleus were made up of still smaller particles, down to the quark. The best that physicists may be able to hope for is evidence that quarks exist in a free state known as quark-gluon plasma, a new elemental form of matter. Now Dr Piyare L Jain, professor of physics, state university of New York at Buffalo, has discovered one piece of evidence for the existence of such a plasma. The discovery by Dr Jain was accomplished through experiments performed by an international group of over 400 physicists from 20 nations and 80 institutions in the particle accelerator at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. THe experiments have implications for understanding how the origin of the Universe occurred. Physicists have proposed that a Big Bang occurred during the first few seconds of the origin of the Universe. "During the Big Bang, the temperature was very high for a short time, measured in microseconds", Dr Jain said. "All quarks and gluons were produced at that time in an expanded state. As they cooled, the quarks became frozen into neutrons, protons and other strongly interactive particles." Dr Jain calculated the energy density of up to 500 particles in each head-on collision created by the heavy ion and recorded in the nuclear emulsion. He then concluded that the higher energy density of the particles after collision may be an indication of the new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma. Dr Piyare L Jain has done extensive accelerators at Cornel, Stanford, Brookhaven Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories. experiments at particle National, Ferm National and AHIMSA: NON VIOLENCE DOCUMENTARY MAKES INTO PEACE IMPERATIVES 1988 Mississauga, On. The north American documentary, Ahimsa, was a very successful feature presentations at the weeklong celebrations of Peace Imperatives 1988 organised and held at the west campus of the University of Toronto. The documentary which explores the traditions of Jain Religion and its peace loving extraordinary followers in India has tried to examine Jain Religion, being one of the oldest and most subtle religions of the world. The message of Ahimsa and Peace as preached and practised by Tirthankaras, Lord Rishab to Lord Mahavir, from the past immemorial historical ages to the present are of paramount importance even today. This is amply displayed by the screening of the documentary, Ahimsa, during the Peace Imperatives 1988 The documentary in its making was assisted by the Jain Federation of North America and many Jain institutions and individuals in India. Prof. Padmanabh Jaini of University of california was its consultant. 2010_02 8 Page #10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ YOU SAID IT! Observations & Comments Federation of Jain "Jain Digest', the first concrete action of the Associations in north America, is an essential link between the Jains to communicate in this technological age. "Jain Study Circular", edited by Dr Dulichandra Jain, is equally doing a yeoman service to the entire north American Jain community, which desirably needs an organisation in an institutional fashion. Jain Digest covers the news of entire Jain World. It brings out Jain Matrimonials and the "Book Reviews" attempts to provide a wealth of knowledge badly needed. To suggest, for those who are interested in having them for the price, is not out of its place. "Jain Religion in India's History A Historian's Reflection", by Miss Vasanta Kumari, Reader in History, Maharani's College, Mysore, India, relates the present with the past and grows to grip with a questioning mind. Such research materials-books, papers et all-, from such knowledgeable persons surely will help rejuvenating the interest among reasourceful individuals or organisations here in north America. The very soul and sense of identity, pride and strength of their Jain heritage are essential basics of their well-being. Reconsideration has its beginning when social evils occur due to environmental or circumstantial causes; values of cultural difference or the arrogant assumption of western version as the remedy and the failure to understand the fundamentals of Jain doctrines. Thank Lord Jina, the situation is not set infor the tragic dependence and alienation. It is essential to stress upon a balance of body, mind and spirit in Jaina living and life. Understanding the new societal environment, its impact and the adjustments, the adoptions that are necessary to replant the roots of the Jain heritage in the new land demand a non-cataclysmic casuistry for the mere survival. IN ACCORDANCE WITH BOMBAY HIGH COURT JUDGEMENT A petition filed at the High Court of the then Bombay Province, C.W.J.C 91/1951, by Jain community to the Bench of chief Justice Chagla and Justice Gajendragadkar, the judgement ruled that: "Harijans have no right to entry into Jain temples as these are not Hindu temples. Harijan Temple Entry Act legislation is not the object to do away with the distinction between Hindu and Jain temples. It is well known that Jains are Hindu dissenters and their religious beliefs differ. Jains do not recognise and do not subscribe to Hindu vedas. Jains assign the highest place to their saints known as Tirthankaras, who according to Jaina, have successfully become superior Gods. It is true, according to Judicial decision, in absence of proof or customs and usage to the contrary, the Hindu Law applies to the Jains. Even so, their distinct and seperate entity as a class by themselves, governed by their own religious tenets and beliefs cannot be disputed". Dated 19 August 1949, Bombay State Government in its notification accepted the judgement of the High Court that " Jains cannot be described as Hindus ", thus Hindu Law of 1878 on Jains was squashed. - The Jaina Antiquary, Vol. 40, No. 2 December 1987. When Jainology and Prakrit Studies was instituted, under the Professorship of Late Dr A.N.Upadhye, eminent Jain scholar of international repute, through the endowment of Late Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, India's industrialist, at the University of Mysore, it was the first and foremost faculty in southern India. Prof.M.P.L.Kant, a Senate member of the University of Mysore, recently raised the question with the university as regards to Jainology faculty. The Vice Chancellor, Dr Selvidas, in a reply, addressed the question candidly. It was revealed that there are only two registered students at the faculty and the annual expenditure is Rs 200,000. However, the Vice Chancellor assured that the Jain faculty will not be closed and on the contrary, he stressed to devise plans to attract students to the program. The faculty in deed has produced many graduates. However, it has failed to address issues of the students after their graduations. Marketability of the graduates' specialised knowledge and services, either in the private sector or various governmental levels, have not been addressed both in curriculum content and in the context of job approach. It is time the Jaina Leadership of the area collectively studies the situation, and in conjunction with the national Jain Leadership and Jainology faculties of other universities in india, unveil a plan of programs and actions before it becomes an epidemic.
