When Jainology and Prakrit Studies was instituted, under the Professorship of Late Dr A.N.Upadhye, eminent Jain scholar of international repute, through the endowment of Late Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, India's industrialist, at the University of Mysore, it was the first and foremost faculty in southern India. Prof.M.P.L.Kant, a Senate member of the University of Mysore, recently raised the question with the university as regards to Jainology faculty. The Vice Chancellor, Dr Selvidas, in a reply, addressed the question candidly. It was revealed that there are only two registered students at the faculty and the annual expenditure is Rs 200,000. However, the Vice Chancellor assured that the Jain faculty will not be closed and on the contrary, he stressed to devise plans to attract students to the program. The faculty in deed has produced many graduates. However, it has failed to address issues of the students after their graduations. Marketability of the graduates' specialised knowledge and services, either in the private sector or various governmental levels, have not been addressed both in curriculum content and in the context of job approach. It is time the Jaina Leadership of the area collectively studies the situation, and in conjunction with the national Jain Leadership and Jainology faculties of other universities in india, unveil a plan of programs and actions before it becomes an epidemic.
