________________ REPORT: JAIN DIGEST IN PERSPECTIVE The scene: The Third Biennial Convention of Jain Federation in Detroit, MI and presided over by the then President, Dr. Manoj Dharamsi. During its deliberations, dialogues and discussions; suggestions and proposals, and ideas and interests, in many forms and numbers, were focussed. Fait accompli of the deliberations is the birth of Jain Digest. The maiden edition of Jain Digest came out in July 1985. The prime objectives of the magazine, determined by the sum total of the membership and its values, were to strengthen the process of disseminating information and advance the avenues of Jain Religion: its culture, principles and philosophy through news and issues relevant to the present. Jain Digest had and has its growing pains. As a publication of the Jain Federation, it reaches a wide variety of people throughout the world, and circulated free to the vast majority. Funding for the magazine has been modestly achieved from patrons' financial contributions and volunteer individuals. Nevertheless, more support is warranted in money and people to put the magazine on a solid foundation. Realising patronage pledges is tricky. However things are rosy except for about 20 pledges. Being unsuccessful after constant requests and reminders, the names of unrealised pledges have been removed from the patrons list. One could see some blanks in the list. Yes, it had a demoralising effect on us who want to work to make Jain Digest work. During the past years, Jain Digest has seen a slow but continued improvement in contents, format and presentation. Indeed there are scores of places where improvements are still needed. Many readers have expressed too. To make it all happen, continued interest and support need to come from individuals and institutions. The absence of it proves otherwise disastrous. It is noted here that many individuals, to name a few, Chandu Morbia from Windsor, Surendra Singhvi from St. Louis, Arvind Shah of Saginaw, Harish Jain of Hamilton, Magan Shah of Toronto, Arvind Shah of Troy, Lax Gogri of Detroit, Jagat Jain of Buffalo, Sulekh Jain of Cincinnati, Tansukh Salgia from Parma, Vasu Morchi of Mississauga and Sumat Prakash Jain of Hamilton and many more have encouraged Jain Digest over the period. These men of vision, dedication and contribution are the sum total for the success of Jain Digest. As Editor of Jain Digest, I acknowledge the noble spirit of these noble people and salute.
