________________ INTRODUCTION "जेण विणा लोगस्स वि ववहारो सव्वहा ण णिघडइ । तस्स भुवणेकगुरुणो णमो अणेगंतवायस्स ॥" At the very outset, it may be mentioned that this is by no means an exhaustive introduction; but it is after all a concise one dealing with such items as can be conveniently presented in this Volume when the press-copy of the 2nd Volume remains to be set up in types. Outlines of Anekāntavāda Meaning -Tlie word anckūntavada (P.1 aneçantavīya) can be split up into four parts viz. (lit, ekce, anta and vīla. These respectively wean: not, one, a side or an end, and a statement or an exposition. Thus anekānitatūcla stands for a many-sided exposition. Thereby it is implied that it is a statement made after taking into account all the possible angles of vision regarding any object or idea. In short, it is an opposite of ekīntavcīda, a one-sided exposition irrespective of other view-points. This is probably the reason why it is also designated as syālvada (P. siyāvaya). Synonyms—Anekāntavida has various synonyms such as syadvūda, samhcrarādeo, sarvavastuscobalavidat and the like." 1 'P' stands for Püiya (Sk. Prūkrta ). 2 Cf. the following line occurring in Maladhárin lemacandra Sūri's commentary (p. 266) on Anuogadūra : "उक्ता मूलनयाः, एषां चोत्तरोत्तरमेदप्रभेदा...सबैश्च सुनौमीलितैः स्याद्वाद इत्यलं" 3 See p. 25, 1. 30. 4 See p. 26, 1. 10 and p. 46, 1. 13. 5 By the like, I may suggest cikulorūda (p. 13, 1. 17), todaladväda (p. 32, 1, 30), sarkirnavāda (p. 13, I. 27 ) and vibhajjavaya (Sk, vibhajyaváda ) mentioned in Süyagada (I, 14, 22).
