Survey of the text and its Commentaries
Title—The text is named as Anekāntajayapatākāprakarana by Haribhadra Sūri, the author himself, as can be seen from v. 10 (p. 2)'. It means a treatise which is a banner of victory of the many-sided (doctrine). Such a title seems to have been selected by this Haribhadra Sīri, with a view to suggesting that this treatise refutes or enal·les its readers to refute the allegations of the Bauddhas and others made against anekintcwula and thereby establishes the victory of anckiintuvāda over ckrintavāda.
The word prakarana whiclı forms a part of the title usually means a chapter or a section of a work; but, so far as the title is concerned, it means a small treatise wherein one particular subject is predominently treated”. Thus the word prakarana is applicable to works written in verse, too, and as a matter of fact, its Pāïya equivalent pagarana is used for Siddhasena Divākara's Sanmaipagarang-a versified work. The word prakarana is used in this old sense by Vācaka Umāsvāti in his Bhasya (p. 933) on his own work Tattvarthādhigamasūtra (1, 20).*
It may be noted en passant that prakarana had in olden days another meaning viz. a section of a work, too.
Language-The entire text is written in classical Sanskrta current in those days, and it follows the grammar of Pāṇini and the like. The words used herein are what we ordinarily come across in the Sanskrta literature. The word a f occurring
