INTRODUCTION
a dharmaputra of Yakini. Then Haribhadra asked Jinadatta Sūri questions about the characteristics of dharma and the fruit derived by leading a religious life. The latter answered: "Bhavaviraha is the fruit attained by those who lead religious life without desiring for any thing." On hearing this Haribhadra said: "I would like to attain this bhavaviraha". Jinadatta replied: "If it is so, you shall have to embrace the Jaina order which preaches complete cessation of sinful activities". Haribhadra agreed to do so and became a disciple of Jinadatta Süri,
According to Kahavali Haribhadra had two all-round pupils, Jinabhadra and Virabhadra by name. In his days the Bauddhas were very powerful in Citrakūta. They were jealous of him owing to his praiseworthy crudition; so, on getting a chance they managed to kill his two disciples. When this sad news reached Haribhadra he became extremely sorry and decided to bring an end of his life by practising anasana. But, as he was a pravacana-prabhavaka, he was persuaded to give up this idea. He eventually composed a number of standard works and looked upon them as his pupils.
From the colophon (v. 12) of Kuvalayamālā it appears that our Haribhadra Suri taught logic to Uddyotana Sūri.
Date of Haribhadra Süri-Out of the available works of Haribhadra Süri there not even one wherein we find the date of its composition or that of any other event connected with his life. There are some Paiya verses' which mention his date of death as 1055 of Vira era (Samvat 585). But this date does not seem to tally with what one can infer from internal and external evidences like names of works and authors mentioned by our author and references pertaining to him in other works. To be explicit, I may begin with Viyarasarapayaraṇa. There Pradyumna Süri says:—
1
One of these versos which is quoted in Vicaras'reni by Merutunga is not traced out as yet as belonging to any particular work composed before Samvat 1361. So this does not help us in determining the upper limit.
We can only presume that tradition Haribhadra died in
some one or
according to Samvat 585.
