Author and Date
This canon has been categorised as Upanga which shows that it was composed at a later period after Lord Mahavira's nirvana. Its author must be some anonymous elderly monk. The date of composition too is unknown. Jivājīvābhigame, containing detailed accounts of the Kalpavrksas, was also composed by the elders. Jambudvipaprojňupti gives only a brief account of them indicating the details through 'java'. This shows that Jambudvipaprajñapti was composed at a later period than that of Jivājīvābhigume. Possibly we may ascribe it to an earlier date than the emergence of a clear-cut distinction between Svetambara and Digambara schools which are mostly unanimous about the contents of Jambudvipaprajñapti. On this basis we can guess it to belong to the 4th-5th century of Vīranirvana.
