The scientists have been obliged to postulate the existence of a medium which they call ether because without it they could not prove the phenomena of light, heat, electricity and magnetism. We say that there are so many kinds of ethers, all having different properties. If we give to the first the name of sonoriserous ether, we may give to the second the name of tangiferous ether. If this ether should be taken away from the universe there would be no sensation of touch at all. The third ether is the luminiferous ether, having the property of transmitting light and becoming the medium of vision. The fourth ether gives rise to or rather becomes the medium for the transmission of those peculiar vibrations which give rise to the sensation of taste. The fifth, in the same way, gives rise to the sensation of smell. All these are present in the air and in everything, but the proportion is different in different persons and also in the same person at different ages. The difference between all these different organisms in the universe is due to the proportion of these ethers. Ore may be predominant over the others, but still all of them are present and all have their special properties. The luminiferous ether, although it has the property of transmitting light and heat, electricity and magnetism, has another property, the property of expanding. The ether whose chief property is that of giving us the sensation of touch has also the quality of motion, and motion is due to the presence of this ether.
