It is pleasing to turn from reading descriptions of the appalling destructions now going on in Manchuria to the peacefulness of a faith that allows life and sout even to those things which wə generally call inanimate. The belief that we are not entitled to abuse anything in nature, no matter howsoever small or insignificant, should be preached withgreat persist. ence. But I hope I will not offend you if I say that a bene. volent Providence has created things for our benefit, which if properly used can help man, the highest creation of God in working for the perfection of human life. It is not only practically necessary but quite essential that we should derive, due benefit from the good things of this world, for true economy never forbids use, but abuse.
In conclusion I shonld like to say that though religion is necessary, bigotry is not. All religions are treading the paths which their votaries believe to lead to Cruth. Let us therefore not forget in the heat of the journey the true syinpathy of fellowtravellers, and the hospitality of the road-side. The search for truth is not a scramble for some exhaustible source of wealth. Truth is vast and inexhaustible; there is enough of it for all races and religions. We should therefore sympathise and respect all men, no matter of what religious persuasion. My father and his Government are aiming at the unity of all our subjects, and I trust, that as loyal subjects and good neighbours, all of yon will join hands with us and bring about unity first in the Baroda Raj and then in all India. If we can accomplish that we can look forward to a general parliament of man and federation of the world. * See foot-note on page 42.
