________________ ATOM IN JAIN PHILOSOPHY 59 grouping them from certain aspects 25 First of all there are free unattached solitary paramānus which form paramānu vai ganā The second group contains composite of two pai amănus The third group contains composites of three paramānus and so on We then come to a group which contains bodies or innumerable (asamih li vat) number of paramūnus All these vargarās are not capable of being associated with jeeva We are mainly concerned with the following eight important vargaņās which interact with the psychic order of existence and these we shall therefore discuss in some detail 1) Audānika Vai ganā All material compositions large and small which are or can be made perceivable by sense organs belong to this group All organic material which make the cells (blood bone skin etc ) comprising the bodies of all living and dead organisms (including the entire vegetable kingdom) and Inorganic atoms, molecules and compounds in short almost all things encountered by us in everyday life belong to Audānka Varganā 11) Vurkiya Varganā Celestial bodies of the inlabitants of heaven devas and hell (naikis) are composed of the material of this group wluch is very much more subtle than the previous group 111) A hūraka Varganā The material of this group is very niuch finer than the preceding ones It is used by ascetics who have acquired special powers, to produce an astral body (called ālāraka sarīra) The learned sage uses this type of body for visiting omniscient persons at far off places, for the purpose of clarifying some doubts 25 Gommajasära jemahanda gatha 593 594
