with Ísvarakļona, but as it is opposed to all Indian traditions this identification seems to have no value. Kamalas'ila in his commentary mentions those two separately and gives Rudrila as the proper name of Vindhyaväsin. Moreover, if we are correct in our supposition we can point out one sʻloka in the Tattvasangraha which is in all probability a quotation from the now lost work of Vasubandhu called the Paramarthasapta:i. The S'loka is :
यदेव दधि तत् क्षीरं यत् क्षीरं तद्दधीति च ।
वदता रुद्रिलेनैव ख्यापिता विन्ध्यवासिता ॥ The ground on which Vindhyavisin is identified with Ís'vara. krşņa may be summarized thus:—Paramartha while going to China took away with him a large number of Sanskrit books of reputed authors, and among them a work which is indifferently called Hirunyasaptati, Suvarnasuptati and Samkhyasaptati. This work was accompanied with a commentary of an unknown author. The text agrees with the Sanskrit work known to us by the name of Samkhyasaptati of İs'varakrşņa, which has been several times printed in Sanskrit. As this Sankhyasaptati was called Hiranyasaptati in Chinese and as Viridhyavasin according to Paramartha obtained gold (Hiranya or Suvarņa) from a certain Vikrainaditya it is claimed that the author, Îs'varakrşņa must therefore be identified with Vindhyavasin. This is a very fallacious argument and is against all the traditions current in India, as has been rightly pointed out by Dr. Belvalkar. We do not know, and we do pot see the necessity of explaining, why in Chinese the Samkhyasaptati was known as the Hiranyasaptati. But when we compare the Chinese translation with the Sámkhyasaptati of İs'varakrşņa we find both agree. In all probability Vindhyavasin composed
