________________ ११२ : श्रमण/जनवरी-मार्च/१९९८ That is righteous one ought not to deliberate on the definition of valid knowledge etc. because of lack of motive in discussing it. Also because great scholar Ācārya Siddhasena has propounded likewise -- Means of knowledge and application ensuing them are wellknown, hence, relating the definition of valid knowledge (Pramāņa) is superfluous. The verse 'faalf IFA occurs in Nyāyāvatāra (Kārikā, 2) of Siddhasena. However, it is notable that Nyāyāvatāra is, not unanimously, ascribed to Siddhasena Divākara. According to some scholars Nyāyāvatāra is not the work of Siddhasena Divākara. Haribhadra has denounced meat-eating, liquor-drinking and coupulation in 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th prakaraņas of this text. In the process of refuting the view-point of advocates of meat-eating, he cites the famous verse of Manusmrti -- न मांस भक्षणे दोषः न मद्ये न च मैथुने। प्रवृत्तिरेषा भूतानां निवृत्तिस्तु महाफला ।। २।१८।। There is no sin in eating meat, in drinking spirituous liquor and in carnal intercourse, for that is the natural way of living beings but abstention (from these) brings great rewards. On the basis of Manusmsti itself, he attempts to refute these contentions one by one. To refute meat-eating, he has cited the following verses form the Manusmặti, which are self-contradictory. The verses of Manusmặti occurred in Astaka Prakarana, (18th) are as follows -- मां स भक्षयिताऽमुत्र यस्य मांसमिहाम्यहम् । । ५/१८ 'Me' he will devour in the next world, whose flesh I eat in this life, the wisemen declare this to be the real meaning of the term flesh.
