________________ ... INTRODUCTION The purport of the first reference is that a monk who while studying such epoch-making works (Prabhāvaka) of Jainism-aş Siddhiviniscaya, Sanmati and the like, commits no sin even if he has to use forbidden things, that is, he need not undergo any purificatory penance. The second reference to Sanmati is as follows:— "In order that the Sūtras may not perish, permission is given to go even to the country of a heretic king, if there different. But the right interpretation of the sūtra as given by me is this," then this presumptuous disciple parading his knowledge before the audience is said to have insulted his preceptor. In the said Corņi Acārya Siddhasena has been charged of having insulted his preceptor in the manner mentioned above and this insult is said to be of a serious character Bhāvāsātană. The author of this Curņi explains the nature of this insult and as an instance in point mentions the name of Siddhagena as having insulted his preceptor. The author remarks :--"Siddhasena has interpreted the same sūtra in various ways." Looking to the nature of these remarks it is quiet clear that by Siddhasena, Acārya Siddhasena alone is meant, no other Siddhasena is known to have interpreted the gūtras in various ways. The author of the Cūrņis evidently refers to the interpretation by Siddhasena of the Satras in such a manner as would agree with his doctrine of Upayogabheda vada. This reference to Siddhasena lends a strong support to his date as fixed above. The author of this Cūrņi is probably Jinadasa as at least somebody who lived not later than Jinadasa. The reference to Siddhasena as found in the Curņi is as follows: __ “अणुट्ठाए निविट्ठाए चेव, अभिन्ना ण ताव विसरति, भवोच्छिण्णा जाव एक्को बि अच्छति, तमेव त्ति जो आयरिएण अत्थो कहितो दोहि ते( ती )हिं चउहि वा, जहा सिद्धसेणायरितो तमेवाधिकार विकल्पयति अयमपि प्रकारो creditate fra Tungal, Hjqatarcu Hafat ," Dasācūrņi p. 19.
