The importance of this Appendix in the progent Felumê cannot be exaggerated as it is extremely useful, firstly, for the proper appreciation of the Dvyāśraya kāvya, and secondly for the text of the commentary., For, the commentary embodies a very large portion of Hemacandra's grammar and also of his Vrtti. Thus the proparation of the text of this Appendix was an important stage in the preparation of the Dvyāśraya Kāvya and its commen-? tary. It will be seen from the critical apparatus that the Kāvya and the commentary are based on the text of the Appendix ! where the MSS. failed to give a clue to tho accurate text. ; A few observations are necessary here about the method of recording variants from MSS. of a work written in Prakrit. Firstly, MSS. are at variance in writing .and it when they are followed by a conjunot congonant, ag an option is allowed in such cases to share
and 3 substituted by Hema, ii 85 and i. 116; and fur, ther by iv. 410 and iv. 411. The result of the promisouous operation. of these rules is complete chaos. The variants, therefore of ş and 3 in place of g and 37 are not recorded. Secondly, the scribes often write a ast; but when the stroke above 3 is obliterated or misplaced, we decided the correct reading on the strength of the metrical value and ignored the variants. Thirdly, the promisouous use of Tela by Jain writers may be tolerated elsewhere but cannot be so tolerated in the present work which obviously illustrates a system of grammar; we have not recorded variants due to guia. Fourthly, certain formas allow an option, e.g., हिं may be written as हि, हि or हिं; we ignored the variants of this type, metrical needs being our sóle guide. In fact MSS. do not use the sign of apunāsika at all, even in cases where the use of anunāsika is to be illustated. Fifthly, the MSS. make promis
