good, that people go to the Narmadā, the Sarasvati, the Yamunā and the Bhāgirathi and throw themselves like beasts into them? Jina should be fixed firmly in mind as if he were made a resident there or as if he were painted or engraved or reflected there or as if he were there by nature. Without mercy all show of holiness is worthless ; and one possessed of mercy cannot fail to get salvation.
Some important events in the life of king Kumārapāla may be summarised here. He was born in Samyat 1149 or 1092 A.D., and came to the throne in Samvat 1199 or 1142 A.D. The first ten years of his reign were taken up by the consolidation of his position as King. He was a great warrior and extended the kingdom of Gujarat largely. Hemacandra,mentions in his Mahāviracarita that the conquests of king Kumārapāla would extend to Turkistan in the North, the Ganges irr the East, mount Vindhya in the South, and the ocean in the west.
