________________ xxji KUMARAPALACARITA, good, that people go to the Narmadā, the Sarasvati, the Yamunā and the Bhāgirathi and throw themselves like beasts into them? Jina should be fixed firmly in mind as if he were made a resident there or as if he were painted or engraved or reflected there or as if he were there by nature. Without mercy all show of holiness is worthless ; and one possessed of mercy cannot fail to get salvation. Some important events in the life of king Kumārapāla may be summarised here. He was born in Samyat 1149 or 1092 A.D., and came to the throne in Samvat 1199 or 1142 A.D. The first ten years of his reign were taken up by the consolidation of his position as King. He was a great warrior and extended the kingdom of Gujarat largely. Hemacandra,mentions in his Mahāviracarita that the conquests of king Kumārapāla would extend to Turkistan in the North, the Ganges irr the East, mount Vindhya in the South, and the ocean in the west. स कौबेरीमातुरुष्कमैन्द्रीमात्रिदशापगाम् । JIRA-Ethique qui fathsafat ul IV. 52. · The most important victories over the Sāmbhara King Arņorāja and the Silāhāra king Mallikārjuna have already been mentioned above. When peace was established in the country he devoted himself zealously to religious matters. His minister Bāhadadeva introduced Hemacandra to him, and his learning made such a strong impression on him that he became converted to Jainism in Samvat 1209 or 1152 A.D., took the twelve vows of the faith, built numerous temples throughout his kingdom, stopped the seven vices, and issued orders for the prohibition of slaughter in the kingdom. Two edicts on noninjury to beings issued by the feudatories of Kumārapāla, Panapākṣa and Alhapadeva, have come to light. He made
