________________ 74 HERMANN KUHN SUTRAS makes us aware of deeper dimensions of what we experience. This happens though we might not notice any immediate results. To explore peripheral events for the expansion of our consciousness means to act on our insights, - to change the patterns of life we recognize as limiting, - to break away from people who steal our energy or direct our attention towards irrelevant issues, - to get rid of objects whose maintenance costs too much time etc. This new alignment concentrates our energy and focuses our awareness on the deeper dimensions the original expansive events offer. EXAMPLE: When we intuitively orient towards growth, we feel a mental clarity that differs drastically from the almost hypnotic involvement of our consciousness in the chores of daily life. This breakthrough is always accompanied by a sensation as if we wake up from a long and intense daydream. The experience is very agreeable. While it lasts, we often remember clearly when it occurred before, and how much time has passed since. As we probe deeper into this clarity, we become aware how few people around us look beyond the short-lived activities, goals or security they strive for. Our experience creates a stark contrast to their way of life. This contrast makes us more aware that the new dimension we perceive extends much farther than the usual objectives of daily life could ever reach. We now become curious how to trigger these moments of clear awakening intentionally. - Finding out what causes Total Perception to occur (adhikarana) - means to discover how we can reproduce a particular state of consciousness (or event). Two factors trigger the rising of higher states of consciousness within us. Both factors are independent of each other: 1 - Inner causes (abhyantara) - We experience more advanced states of consciousness as soon as all emotional attachments to lower levels, sublime fear of the experience of higher dimensions etc. that block our ability to perceive them, become inactive. This is the primary cause. Yet our emotional attachments Jain Education International For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
