(15) Sensory knowledge develops in four stages:
1 - apprehension (avagraha) 2 - forming a first idea of what we perceived (ila) 3 - evaluation of our perception (avaya) 4 - consolidating and storing the perception and its evaluation
in our memory (dharana). (16) Sense-perception recognizes twelve fundamental features of the
perceived objects and events:
1 - many (bahu) 2 - few (one unit) (eka) 3 - many kinds (bahuvidha) 4 - few kinds (one kind) (ekavidha) 5 - fast (ksipra) 6 - slow (aksipra) 7 - partial (anihsrita) 8- complete (nilisrita) 9- perceived indirectly (anukta) 10 - perceived directly (ukta) 11 - steady, permanent (dhruva) 12 - transient (adhruva).
(17) Sense-perception (mati) perceives not only the outer (visible)
characteristics of an element, but its entire content, purpose and
meaning. (18) The first step of sense-perception - apprehension (avagraha) -
perceives objects and events in an indistinct way.
(19) Indistinct apprehension does not arise through the eyes or the
mind.
