________________ SUTRAS TEXT OF THE SUTRAS 141 (20) Knowledge we obtain from external sources (sruti) first needs to be perceived by our senses. There are two types of scriptures. The first type has twelve, the second one many divisions. (21) In the inhabitants of celestial and nether regions extrasensory perception (avadhi) is inborn. (22) Human beings and animals experience six types of extrasen sory perception (avadhi) once their respective karmas are dissolved. (23) Direct perception of the consciousness of others (manah-paryaya) occurs in two intensities: - in simple form (rjumati) and - as deep, comprehensive insight (vipulamati). (24) These two types of direct mental perception (manalı-paryaya) differ in their degree of clarity and in the possibility of losing this ability again. (25) Direct mental perception (manal-paryaya) differs from extrasen sory perception (avadhi) by - its clarity - the spatial boundaries in which it functions - the degree of realization of the perceiver and - the type of the perceived objects. (26) Sense-perception and external knowledge perceive all six ele ments (living beings, matter, time etc.), but not all their features. (27) Extrasensory perception (avadhi) perceives all that has form, but not all its features. Jain Education International For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
