________________ SUTRAS TEXT OF THE SUTRAS 139 139 (9) We access knowledge (jnana) through five different channels: - our senses (mati) - external sources (scriptures, teachers etc.) (sruti) - extrasensory perception (clairvoyance, telepathy etc.) (avadhi) - direct perception of the consciousness of others (manah paryaya) and - omniscience (kevala jnana). (10) All five channels of knowledge operate with Total Perception - pramana. (11) The first two channels give us indirect access to knowledge. (12) The remaining three channels provide direct access to knowl edge. (13) - Recollection (of something known before, but presently not in contact with our senses) (smrtil) - recognition (of an object known before, when the object itself or something similar or markedly dissimilar is presented to our senses) (sanjna) - induction (reasoning on the basis of observation) (chinta) - deduction (reasoning by inference) (abhinibodha) are also considered sensory knowledge (mati).
