________________ SUTRAS THE KEY TO THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE 123 SUTRA 31 मतिश्रुतावधयो विपर्ययश्च ॥ ३१ ॥ Mati shruta vadhayo viparyayashcha (31) - Sense-perception (mati) - knowledge from external sources (sruti) and - clairvoyance (avadhi) can also produce error. (31) What causes error? We experience error when we project concepts onto our perception that do not correspond with reality. We experience error, when we cease to orient towards growth and thus forego our flawless intuitive insight into reality. The cause for error is not the process of perception. When we orient towards growth, we perceive exactly the same forms, colors etc. as someone subjected to erroneous concepts. Error is caused when we do not orient the processing of our perception towards the purpose of reality (see sutra 2). Error manifests in form of - Doubt, skepticism, uncertainty (samishaya) - Doubt and skepticism reject insights how to re-orient our ideas and actions before they can stimulate us. Even though we recognize these (temporary) insights more or less clearly, we refuse this offer to change our perspectives and action-patterns. Doubt and skepticism always express inner uncertainty. We either acquire (learn) doubt and skepticism from 'rolemodels' we imitate, or give in to outside pressure not to violate conventional opinions and behavior, or by accepting established patterns and taboos out of social opportunism.
