North Texas (Dallas Area) Jain Society of North Texas elected new Board of Directors during November for 1999 term and the board elected officers for the center. Jain Youth Group is planning a Southwest region Youth Conference during the Memorial Day weekend. The main theme is art and humanity in Jainism emphasizing Jain architecture, literature, music, art, sci- ence and technology. Some out-of-town scholars are being invited for this confer- ence. To this end some Jain families who went on a Yatra in India recently have brought baack some nice pictures and video of various religious places, some of which were shown at the January general meeting. Houston, TX Paryushan Parva was celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm. We were fortunate during Paryushan to have Kumarpal Desai at our center whose lectures enlightened us all. There were a lot of Tapasvis who did various Tapasyas as follows: Adults. Ansuyaben Mehta: 21 days, Sheetalben Shah: 9, Latikaben Jain: 9, Mukeshbhai Shah: 8, Anilbhai Sanghani: 8, Ranjanben Sanghani: 8, Meenaben Shah: 8, Amitaben Solanki: 8, Shefaliben Jhaveri: 7(Khirsamudra). Youth. Ricki Shah: 8 days, Anish Shah: 8, Purvi Shah: 8, Sangita Sutaria: 8, Samir D. Sheth: 7 (Khirsamudra), Pallu Dedhia: 8, Bela M. Shah: 3+2+1, Sonya Dedhia: 6, Sudha Doshi: 3, Deepak Doshi: 3+2+1, Pinky Shah: 7. Among the other dignitaries, Vasantbhai Khokhani, a scholar of Shrimad Rajchandra visited us on September 6 and delivered a lecture. On September 20th, Acharya Jinchandra Suriji from Bikaner delivered a religious discourse. During Diwali we had a pleasure of a having two Samanijis Shrut Pragna and Aswini Pragna for ten days. Their lectures as well as their "Preksha Meditation and yoga" practices were welcomed by all of our members. On November 22, we celebrated our temple's third anniversary with Deep Sthapan, Kumbha Sthapan, Snatra pooja, Adhar Abhisek and flag hoisting. It was a grand success. On December 13th the Doctors Club conducted a Heart Disease Awareness program in memory of our beloved Dinesh Lakhia. Second Jain Pathshala Teachers' Workshop was hosted by JSH and conducted by Pravin K. Shah of Raleigh, NC from February 12-14. Many Pathshala teachers and potential ones from Southwest region took advantage of this to enhance their knowledge of Jainism. JSH contact is president Jitendra Shah at 281/550-3155. Southeast Surendra Shah, Regional Editor Atlanta, GA An election was held in December 1998, to elect the officers for the year 1999. The election was uncontested and all the nomiess won. The Atlanta Jain Center's plans for the building are progressing very well. The build- ing will be constructed in Norcross (a suburb of Atlanta) on four (4) acres of land. The site has been already cleared, graded and ready for the construction. The archi- tectural, mechanical electrical and plumbing plans have been finalized. The bid pack- ages are ready to be sent out for inviting bids. Madhuben Sheth and her family's contributions are very significant and help expedite the progress. Dr. John Cort, a professor of religion at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, gave a lecture on Jainism on February 27, 1999. It was very interesting as his perspective was from a scholar who was not born or raised as a Jain and grew up in USA. into 21st year of operations. Its membership is in excess of 150. In January 1999, D r. Pravin Shah from Pennsylvania spoke about the spiritual life of Shrimad Rajchandra. In February Ashokbhai and Raginiben Sanghavi from Indiana conducted & explained “How, Why & what of Snatra Pooja. The Center plans to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti on March 28th. Dr. Balbhadra will speak on this day. Our center's temple built in 1995 and is only 3 miles from I-75. The visitors travelling on I75 are requested to visit our temple.
