________________ "There is nothing more powerful than an idea. No weapon can destroy it, no power can conquer it, except the power of another idea." YOUNG MINDS (continued) Announcements Stavan Book In preparation for the upcoming JAINA 1999 Convention in Philadelphia, Young Jains of America would like to prepare a stavan and sutra book. This will benefit all pathsala teachers, students, and anyone interested in Jainism. The book will include sutras or stavans in Hindi or Gujurati with English transliterations and translations. This compilation will be bound and several pages will be illustrated by Jain Youth across the country. We are currently in the process of asking people to contribute any stavans and translations that they might have. Specifically, a letter was sent to the Second Pathsala teacher's convention asking for submissions. In order to have everything ready by the convention, we plan to have all submissions by the end of April. If anyone wishes to contribute to the Stavan Book, please contact our Director of Education, Neha Vagadia, at nvagadia@iris.nyit.edu or (516) 759-0027. Want To Get Involved In YJA? YJA is in the process of recruiting new Executive Board Members. Being on the YJA Executive Board allows you to help make the decisions that affect Jain youth across the country. There is a lot of effort and time commitment involved, but it is well worth the difference you can make in the Jain community. We are specifically looking for candidates from the Midwest and West regions of the United States, but anyone interested is welcome to apply. If you would like to get involved please send your resume (highlighting Jain activities) with a page long essay entitled "How I Can Lead YJA Into The Next Millenium" to: yja.info@iname.com or, bring it along with you at the JAINA Convention, we will be conducting interviews there or by telephone. If you cannot make the commitment of being and Executive Board Member, but would still like to help YJA, you can join one of our committees. Below is a list of our committees and who you should contact if you are interested in helping out: ➤ The Events Committee is responsible for many of the projects YJA undertakes such as foster focus and pen pals. The stops and sites to see are close to being finalized. The cities to be visited include Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, and New York City. Presently, YJA is working on getting a few youth from each area to spend some time with the YJUK members and describe Jain life in America. After enough youth volunteers are gathered, YJA will begin to estimate the number of YJUK members coming. The next step will be to accommodate travel and host housing. The tour is still in its preliminary stages, but it is looking good.
