________________ JAINA & the United Nations of peaceful tomorrows. In the words of SecretaryGeneral Kofi Annan “...(the UN) does not belong to nations alone. It is part of the common heritage of all of the humankind. It belongs to every one. For the past eight years, JAINA's greatest outlay of funds has been for the humanitarian efforts. Through its World Community Service; JAINA regularly devotes all its resources whenever or wherever natural calamities strike. We recruit Doctors and volunteers and take them to the remotest area of the world, desert of Kutch in India and organize medical camp for 3 weeks and treat thousands of patients who have no access to medical care. We have sent help through Red Cross to Rawanda during civil war and were awarded an "Institution of the Year" award by Niagara chapter of American Red Cross. For each one of us, it is a expression of human faith and confidence in the future. Non-Governmental Organizations play an important part in functioning of the U.N". Other agencies of the UN like UNICEF (United Nations Children's Education Fund), the WHO (World Health Organization), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and a program that provides a third of world food aid - FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) deliver much needed humanitarian relief projects all around the world. We have helped the people at the time of earthquake in North Ridge, CA; Latur and Uttar Kashi in India. Our volunteers by joining hands with Salvation Army have helped refugees of Mississippi River flood victims. We have established dispensaries in remotest parts of India. Just recently, when devastating cyclone hit the West Coast of India and killed thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of villages, we raised enough monies to adopt two villages(Ragha & Sekhadia) for rehabilitation. We have been recognized by US AID as a volunteer organization and we are working with them on a project for Nalanda District of Bihar that will save thousands of children by providing proper vaccination - nutrition and medical personnel and pre, Intra & post natal care. Our volunteers will provide social education about hygiene. We provide educational material like computers to so many institutions. All our efforts are for humanitarian purpose without regards to race, religion or nationalities. We have, by our humble efforts, united people. Much in the world happens today by efforts of private companies, the mass media, universities, intellectuals, artists and voluntary organizations shape the Civil Society. Non-governmental organizations (NGO) are a basic form of popular participation and representation in the present day world. Today, 1500 NGOs participate in the UN effort to maintain peace around the world. In view of all this, JAINA has decided to register with UN's Department of Public Information as a NGO (Non Governmental Organization). As a NGO, we will be eligible to receive regular mailings of UN information materials and participate in international forums to discuss issues of global concern. We in turn will be able to inform our community of UN activities of concern to us and focus our program to build upon common agenda. By joining hands with the UN, JAINA will be able to spread the message of Peace and Non Violence. The United Nations is a unique institution linking peoples across the globe expressing their faith and hope Jain Education Intermational 2010_02 JAIN DIGEST SPRING 1999/13 www.jainelibrary.org Jain Education Interational 2010_02 For Private & Personal Use Only
