________________ Headquarters Activities In view of the increased workload at JAINA Headquarters, Mr. Kamalesh Amin was named to the part-time position of Executive Director of JAINA at the JAINA Executive Committee meeting held October 4. His activites include: - Assisting in the preparation of JAIN DIGEST and follow up through printing and mailing to every member organization - Manraining various lists: JAIN Digest membership - US JAIN DIGEST - Canada JAIN DIGEST - India JAIN DIGEST - Foreign/Other JAIN DIGEST - Life Membership JAINA Patron membership JAINA Pathshahla Teachers list JAINA Temple list Jain Center Presidents and Directors list Approx. 6,500 records Approx. 450 records Approx. 350 records Approx. 150 records Approx. 525 records Approx. 250 records - Providing assistance to the President with day-to-day activities (e.g. answering letters, telephone call, faxes, inquiring about different things needed by JAINA) - Providing assistance to the members of the Executive Committee in their projects - Providing an advance copy of Jain DIGEST via first class mail to all Patron Members and Trustees - Providing assistance to any Committee Chairperson to distribute books, brochures and any educational material. Also provide additional help - Providing assistance or help to any Jain organization in NA and abroad - Providing a letter to potential citizens to present to the INS INTERNATIONAL NEWS Dr. L. M. Singhvi receives Padma Bhusan Dr. L. M. Singhvi, former high commissioner of India to U.K., received the Padma Bhusan award this past January during India's republic day celebrations. He was once described as “a lawyer by profession, a professor by temperament, a politician by compulsion, a parliamentarian by choice, a researcher by habit and a humanist by nature." He is in addition, a Jain Scholar of the highest calibre. Well known to all Jains are his foreward to the outstanding publication Tattvartha Sutra of Umasvati translated by Nathmal Tatia and his monograph titled the Jain Declaration of Nature presented to His Highness the Duke of Edinborough. JAINA congratulates Dr. L. M. Singhvi for receiving such an honor. Oxford Ahimsa Essay Award The Institute of Jainology is to work with Oxford University to launch a prestigious new essay competition under the title of Oxford Ahimsa Essay Prize and Travel Award. They are expecting to collect a corpus fund of 15,000 pounds. To encourage broader participa tion they are appealing to you to donate between $500 to $1000 for this purpose. They are hoping to have the first competition commence in autumn 1998. Dr. L. M. Singhvi, former High Commis- sioner of India in U.K, initiated this project. Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust The 24th Eye, Dental and Medical Surgical Camp was organized by the Trust from January 6 to January 19, 1998. Many doctors from the U.S., including Dr. Manibhai Mehta, Dr. Dhiraj Shah, Dr. Chandravadan Haria, Dr. Dinesh Shah, Dr. Shanti Kenia, Dr. Rajni Patel and many others as well as many volunteers participated. In two weeks 13,754 patients were treated, including 580 surgeries and 208 patients who were taken to Bombay for further treatment. As usual Jain Center of Southern California collected funds for this worthy cause. North American participation was coordinated by Vijay Chheda and Dr. Manibhai Mehta.. Diwaliben Mohanlal Mehta Award Diwaliben Mohanlal Mehta Charitable trust awarded the prestigious Diwaliben Mohanlal Mehta Awards to ten individuals from different fields. The Awards were given by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, on January 21, 1998. Each award carries a citation, medal and a cash prize of Rs.300,000. One of the recipients of this Award is Mr. Shantilal Mutha, of Bhartiya Jain Sanghtana, Pune. He has developed a home for 2000 orphan children affected by the Latur earthquake.JAINA has contributed, in the past, more than 10 Lakh rupees for this noble cause. Jain Social Group International Conference Sixth International Conference of the Jain Social Group was held in Pune, India from December 19 to 21, 1997. More than 3,000 delegates from around the world attended the gathering. Shri C.N. Shanghavi, Founder President of JSG Federation was felicitated at the conference. Acharya Chandnaji, Shri Shantilal Mutha and Shri Arunbhai Zaveri were the keynote speakers.
