Dhirajbhai met with several dignitaries and briefed them on the activities of JAINA. Below is his diary of activities from December 1997 to February 1998. DECEMBER 20, 1997 Arrived at London. Received by Jain leaders of London. Met representatives of 29 Jain organizations. Spoke to them about JAINA and its activities. A very good interaction with all of them. In the evening, attended Swadhyay at Navnat Hall and addressed the gathering. DECEMBER 21 Dr. Natubhai Shah took me to Leister Temple in the morning. It was probably the best temple I have seen in the western world. Congratulations to all involved in this beautiful project. Met the leaders of Jain Samaj of Europe and exchanged ideas. In the evening, Dr. L.M. Singhvi, India's High commissioner to the U.K., invited for dinner and discussion. We had a very lengthy and fruitful talk on many subjects particularly about the celebration of Lord Mahavir's 2600th birthday. DECEMBER 24-25, 1997 Met the leaders of the Jain community of Bombay and briefed them about the activities of JAINA. Discussed building organizational bridges between JAINA and the Jain Communities in India. JANUARY 6, 1998 Press conference at Chelmsfor Club - Delhi. Press conference was attended by all the major news organizations of India including Times of India, Hindustan Times, Hindu, Navbharat Times, P.T.I., Reuters and many others. It lasted 2 hours and the press was briefed about JAINA and its activities, particularly in regards to the humanitarian. Approximately 100 publications wrote the story about JAINA and its activities. I do not think that we have ever been able to convey the message of JAINA-Ahimsa, Aparigrah, Anekantvad and Anukampa to more than 300 million people by just one press conference. It seems to be the most effective tool. I will encourage all Jain leaders to use this tool and spread the message of Mahavir. In the evening, I addressed members of "Ahimsa International" and answered questions about JAINA. JANUARY 8 Meeting with the U.S. Ambassador Richard Celeste for about one hour. Briefed him about JAINA and its activities and also its positive effect of improving Indo-US relations. The Ambassador had read details of the press conference, and was very impressed by our activities. The meeting was also attended by his political advisor Eric Tunis, Heather Goldman of USAID, R. P. Jain, coordinator for "Jains Abroad" and Ramesh Jain of the Times of India. I presented the ambassador The Peaceful Liberators. Addressed the members of JAIN MAHASABHA in Delhi and urged them to continue their good work. JANUARY 9 Interview with Statesman. JAINA got nationwide publicity when this interview was published on the 11th of January. On the 18th January, the Times of India, Delhi supplement published my interview. Dr. Jagat Jain, former JAINA President, and myself met with Mr. K. C. Jain, community leader of Delhi, accompanied by Mr. R. P. Jain of Delhi. JANUARY 10 Flew to Bhuj-Kutch with American Counsel General, Mr. Huddle., to observe Bidada Medical Camp. Worked in the camp till the 18th. JANUARY 11 Inaugurated the medical camp at Nakhatrana and spent a day treating patients. JANUARY 12 Addressed Bhuj Jain Sangh and briefed them about the activities of JAINA. Inaugurated BHUJ Blood Bank. JANUARY 13 Visited Vasai Medical Clinic started by JAINA. Clinic treats 75 patients a day at no cost to the patient. JANUARY 19 Met Muni Jambuvijay, Scholar of Jainism, asked for the guidelines about temple formation. His thoughts are very close to JAINA'S. JAIN DIGEST SPRING 1998/7 Jain Education Interational 2010_02 Page #10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ INTERNATIONAL NEWS (continued) PANCHAKALYANAKA From the life of Mahavira Janak Khendry--an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer-made history by presenting "PANCHAKALYANAKA- From the Life of Mahavira" on October 15, 1997, at the Premiere Dance Theatre, Toronto, Canada. "This is the first time that the life of a Jain Tirthankra has ever been presented in classical dance. This was not the usual dance drama. This was a true narrative of the life of a great soul presented reverently, absorbingly and touchingly. The most remarkable thing about this presentation was that Khendry was able to put forward Bhagwan Mahavira's message of Ahimsa without HIS presence on stage. Khendry showed a great deal of sensitivity and reverence for the Jain tradition. PANCHAKALYANAKA was presented in five acts, each act representing a Kalyanakafrom Garbha to Moksha. The combination of twelve excellent dancers, Khendry's breathtakingly beautiful choreography, Suren Thakar Mehul's euphonious lyrics, Ashit Desai's divine music, Hema and Ashit Desai's haunting voices created an unforgettable event that was fit for the gods. The dance solos, duets and trios were beautifully choreographed and executed. The most unusual quartet of male dancers, celebrating the lustration of Mahavira was spellbinding. The birth celebrations in King Siddhartha's court where Khendry combined Bharatnatyam, Oddisi and Kathak were an aesthetic experience of colour, movement and light. Diksha Utsav and the Last Sermon were the most moving scenes. The finale was so emotional that it brought the audience to their feet. After three and a half years of study-research and the blessings of late H. H. Acharya Sushil Kumarji Maharaj and H.H. Gurudev Chitrabhhanuji, Janak Khendry was able to present—with great humility-Bhagwan Mahavira's message of Ahimsa to the world. Through additional Preksha Dhyan sessions members were able to learn and actively practice their techniques. It is the most common health problem of our times. Approximately 50 million people have hypertension. After 25 years of progress in treating high blood pressure (HBP), improvements have begun to slow as shown by an increase in strokes, kidney disease and heart failure. Although our understanding of hypertenstion (HTN) has increased, in 90 to 95% of cases, the cause remains unknown. HTN frequently has no symptoms, treatment usually is life long and expensive, and some medicines have troubling side effects. The National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute has issued a sixth report in 1997, on prevention, detection and treatment of HTN. It classified stages as follows: Category Normal High Normal Hypertension Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Systolic Blood Pressure <130 130-139 140-159 160-179 180 or or by Dr. Dilip Shah, Chicago, Illinois or The systolic reading measures arterial pressure when the heart contracts; the diastolic number is the pressure between the heartbeats. E. Engage in 30-45 minutes of aerobic exercise at least 5 times a week. F. Do not smoke. G. Diastolic Blood Pressure <85 85-89 The person with Stage 1 HTN (140-159 systolic/90-99 diastolic) with no cardiovascular disease or risk factors (i.e. diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking) is advised to make life-style modifications as follows: 90-99 100-109 >110 A. Lose weight, if overweight. B. Daily salt intake 2.4 gm or less. C. Potassium rich food or drinks to get 3.5 gm of minerals a day. A good source includes orange juice, bananas, potatoes, prunes and yogurt. D. Limit alcohol intake to 1 oz. for a man and 0.5 oz for a woman. 14/JAIN DIGEST⚫ SPRING 1998 2010_02 Follow DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet. That is a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grain, and non-fat dairy products while low in saturated and total fats in general. This form of non-drug therapy in a group of 459 volunteers with Stage 1 HTN reduced blood pressure by 11 mm for systolic and 6 mm for diastolic. In Stage 2 and Stage 3 when medication is needed, a small dose of thiazide diuretic (water pill) and beta blocker (i.e. propranolol) are recommended as the first line of treatment. Self measurement of blood pressure at home may provide valuable information for initial detection and monitoring treatment. It has four advantages: 1. It distinguishes "white coat hypertension"-high blood pressure noted in doctor's office but normal at other times. Assess response to medication. 2. 3. Improve patient's adherence to treatment. 4. Reduces cost. For home monitoring, a validated electronic device with proven accuracy is recommended. In summary, hypertension is a major risk factor for strokes, heart attack and kidney disease; therefore, prevention and treatment make perfect sense. It is important to work with a physician for an ideal approach. Good Luck! The intention was to organize and co-ordinate the information and ideas by establishing a Pathshala Teachers' Com- munication Network. To communicate this information the vari- ous means of communication available would be used, such as email, fax, JAINA BBS, etc. One important vehicle for communicating to all Jain Centers is JAIN DIGEST. And, very nicely, JAINA has willingly agreed to be a strong link in the network by providing one full page for the presentation of Pathshala news and information. The Jain DIGEST Pathshala Network page will be a forum for people involved in Pathshala to communicate and share informa tion for the continued development of Jain Pathshala education. It will act as a catalyst to reflect the ideas and information to enhance the promotion of Jain Pathshala. As well, this page will be a forum where it will be possible to professionally contribute suggestions and express concerns and constructive criticism regarding Pathshala matters. News regarding Jain Center activities, which may include Pathshala events, is often covered in another section of JAIN DIGEST. Such news would be also welcome on this page if it includes more specific details about the activities, planning, and procedures that went into the program actually occurring; as well as the materials used and the means by which the Pathshala students made their presentations. By giving prominence to Pathshala programs it will motivate Jain Centers to set up and support Pathshala activities and encourage parents to send their children. We propose to give a profile of successful Pathshala and its activities so that it will inspire other centers to follow their example. Most important we want encourage all Pathshala teachers to carry out this important work, and motivate more young peopole to join in this effort. Each center will have a unique challenge depending on its size, community participation and support from the executive committee. The greatest success of the information page will occur if each Pathshala is encouraged and motivated for the benefit of the Jain Community in North America. The final date for Pathshala centers to send their news and information, for publication in the next issue of JAIN DIGEST, is May 1,1998. Please forward your comments either to the Editor in Chief of Jain DIGEST, or to JAINA Headquarters. Both addresses are on page 2. PATHSHALA TEACHERS UPDATE FORM Name of Teacher Center's Name Address News Items JAINA Headquarters recently forwarded the following Jain educational material to all Pathshala: Souvenir of Regional YJA Convention in Raleigh North Carolina, Comparison of the world's major religions, and Fundamentals of Jainism. If your Prathshala has not received it, you can contact Kamalesh Amin at JAINA Headquarters. This material is a valuable addition to your Pathshala's resource center. The Jain Center of Boston is hosting a Pathshala Teachers Convention on May 23-24, 1998 (see the information to the left). At this time it is planned to formally put the JAINA Educational Curriculum material in front of Pathshala teachers for review and approval. It was founded as a society at Amritsar, Punjab, in 1935 and the Institute was established in 1937 at Varanasi, under the name "Shri Sohan Lal Jain Dharam Pracharak Samiti". The institute received the guidance from such eminent scholars as Pt. Sukhlal Ji Sanghvi, who held the Jain Chair at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Later, from Pt. Bechar Das Ji Doshi, Pt. Dalsukh Bhai Malviniya and many more. The present Director, Dr. Sagar Mal Ji Jain, is well known through out the Jain world. "The Institute... has one of the finest libraries in the whole of northern India, boasting more than 26,000 specialised books on Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism for the specific purpose The Campus The Institute is housed on a plot of land measuring 20,000 square metters, and has one of the finest libraries in the whole of northern India, boasting of more than 26,000 specialised books on Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism for the specific purpose of Comparative Studies. Students from all over India and many foreign Universities use the Library. The library contains a number of original hand written manuscripts. Situated on the campus are also the hostels for Sadhus, Sadhvis, boys and girls besides residential facilities for staff and research scholars. A guest house is also maintained for visiting guests and dignitaries. The Director of the Institute also resides within the campus. The latest development is the creation of a Jain Art Gallery and a museum dedicated to ancient Jain Art. In short-it is truly a complete learning resource center dedicated to Jain Studies. The Work The Institute is recognised as a research site for higher Jain studies by Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, which also awards Ph. D. degrees to successful students of the Institute. The Institute so far has turned out 55 Ph. D. scholars and has published over 150 22/JAIN DIGEST SPRING 1998 2010_02 books on various aspects of Jainism. A quarterly research journal is also being published by the Institute, entitled Shraman. The journal contains both English and Hindi articles, and shortly a Gujarati section is to be added. by Indrabhooti Barar The Future The Institute has applied to the Government of India, Department of Education and the Universities Grants Commission for recognition and status as a Deemed University. The application is pending only for the sake of our creation of an endowment fund of Rs. 40 Million. Efforts to that end are on. The Institute has the recognition from the Government of India's Department of Science and Technology for its distinguished contribution to studies in Comparative Jainology with other Shramnic Religions. This is the age of information and in the road map drawn-up by management is to bring this Institute and its activities to the world in a more user friendly manner. With the liberalisation the means of communication shall also improve. We plan to put the library catalogue of the Institute as a first step on the Internet to make it accessible to all easily. Gradually other areas shall follow. This is the 60th year of the Institute and we are planning on celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the Institute. Padam Bhushan, Dr L. M. Singhvi, Ex-High Commissioner of India to U.K. and an eminent scholar of Jainism, has consented to inaugurate the celebrations. On this occasion we plan to felicitate all our old students for their distinguished and dedicated services to Jainism. We also invite anyone who-so-ever may be interested to study Jainism to come and study at the Institute. The purpose is to bring Jainism and its fundamentals to the world in modern Languages.
