परन्तु आज इस बात का पक्का प्रमाण मिलता है कि ऐसी भी घटनाएँ होती हैं जो उपयुक्त नियमों से समझी नहीं जा सकतीं। ऐसी घटनाएँ एक कठिन शब्द के द्वारा व्यक्त की जाती हैं। वह शब्द है साइकिकल (Psychical) । इसका विकास एक ग्रीक शब्द से हुआ है, जिसका अर्थ है--आत्मा। इन घटनाओं का सम्बन्ध आत्मा से समझा जाता था न कि शरीर से'।"
