________________ JAINISM The divisons of the subject IN response to the repeated invitations of the Local Union Club, I stand here to give you a short account of Jainism. I divide the subject into ninc parts, thus :-- (1) The meaning of Jainism. (2) Its principics. (3) The stages of initiation. (4) The nature of sin and virtue. (5) The nature of the bondage of Karma (action). (6) The nature and path of deliverance. (7) Image-worship. (8) The resemblance of other religions with Jainism; and, (9) The happiness of this world and the national welfarc arising from Jainism. I shall now briefly speak about cach of these points. Jainism is the religion prcached by the 'Jincshwars.' Thosc Morning of who have conqucrcd love, hatc, sensual desirc, "Jainism and such other passions, or, those who have vanquished the ciglit *Karmas, arc Jins and those who are the best of them are the Jincshwars. Frequently they are also called alati i. c. those who arc free from all passions, a i. c. thosc who are rovered by Indra and others, 7071 i. c.
