________________ forgiveness, let go, condole, condone and to overlook etc. We become violent because of deadly enemies within us viz : lust, anger, greed, jealousy, infatuation, pride, impatientace, intolerance, avenge and falsehood. The Best eg. of Non-violence is that of Mahatmaji who practised during the freedom movement of India. He said we will protest against the British Empire without resorting to violence. If they hit us, we will not retaliate, silently bear the sufferings metted out to us. Initially people did not agree, but he believed in himself and had full faith in the teachings and preachings of Lord Mahavira Via Shrimad Rajchandraji. In the begining he (Gandhiji) faced difficulties and obstacles vehemently, but he was confident that Britishers would bow do non-violence policy. In the end he succeeded in getting Independence from the clutches of the barbaric British empire. This is the most glaring example of the practical implementation of the Non-violence. Lord Mahavira Propogated the theory on non-violence. He said if we comnot give life to anybody, how can we take someone's life. from this simple maximum accepted to one and all was evolved 'Live and let Live' (allel). During the penance week of 'Paryushan' we seek forgiveness from all living beings by saying (મીચ્છામી દુક્કડમ) Janism is so deep rooted that mere ill feelings or hurting anyone physically, mentally or verbaly would amount to violence and therefore one must refrain from it and practise non-violence. Non-violence is an important tenet of Jainism without which attainment of salvation (Moksha) is not possible. જ્ઞાનધારા Jain Education International ૨૭૨ For Private & Personal Use Only જૈનસાહિત્ય જ્ઞાનસત્ર-૨ www.jainelibrary.org
