________________ A Pure-hearted Servant of Light Shri Gurdial Malik In the days of noise and show, quiet and consolidated work is rather rare. To me revered Pandit Sukhalalji, therefore, is a monument of such unusual achievement. His wide and varied and deep scholarship is reminiscent of Rishis of old. His unbounded zeel for, and pursuit of, knowledge have helped him triumph over handicaps of all sorts. Panditji, however, is not only -an encyclopaedia of learning, but he is also a man of character with socklike rectitude. Thus, he is, every inch of him, a devoted and dynamic seeker of the Word of which the Bible says, "The Word was God and with God." Panditji is, indeed, a pure-hearted and pure-minded servant of the Goddess of Light. My humble and reverent salutations, therefore, to him. ________________ Original Thinker. Dr. T. R. V. Murti Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Professor of Indian Civilization and Culture, Banaras Hindu University. I feel greatly honoured in associating myself in paying my respectful felicitations on the Revered Pandit Sukhlalji's completion of seventy five years of age. Panditji has dominated the world of Indian philosophy and religion for the last forty years and more by his deep scholarship and noble Personality. His philosophical writings on various topics and the scores of his learned and critical introductions and notes to philosophical classics will stand as abiding monument to his peculiar genius and scholarship. I came into contact with the Revered Panditji nearly twenty years ago when he was actively teaching in the Benares Hindu, University as the incumbent of the Jain chair of Logic and Metaphysics in the Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya. I have been privileged to enjoy his valued friendship all these years. Numerous were the occasions when we have had lively philosophical discussions on the roadsides or in his study; most of these just occurred without pre-arrangement, or set purpose. And seldom have I come back from these discussions without receiving new light or striking interpretations even on subjects which I thought I understood quite well. Of course, Panditji's scholarship of Indian thought is surprisingly comprehensive and deep; and his memory is phenomenal. I should however like to record what has specially impressed me in his personality. Pandit Sukhlalji is an original thinker, a restless one. He would look at a theory now from this, now from that angle; he would often-times revise and reverse his own previous conclusions on the subject. The open-mindedness of his spirit, his sensitivity to all aspects of a problem and his

________________ indefatigable persistence in the search of truth have impressed me as worthy of emulation. I have no manner of doubt that Panditji is an authentic and worthy representative of the spiritual line of Indian seers. It is not surprising that his outspoken and independant views have not found favour with some sections of Hindus and Jainas. A fearless thinker, a seeker of truth is not worried, as Panditji is not, by the thought of secular gains and losses. I have not known him utter an unfair or uncharitable remark about any person or get upset by adverse happenings. With few easily satisfied wants and an equanomous temperament, he has been a living example of a true philosopher, a Sthita-prajna. As an original thinker and as a man of striking spiritual virtues, Panditji has been successful in inspiring a circle of young men like Pandit Dalsukhbhai Malvaniya and others. This is not one of the least of the many services that he has rendered to our cultural life. ________________ HP Pandit Sukhalalii ...: A Dynamic Litterateur Professor Dr. A. N. Upadhye, Kolhapur * Prajnachaksu Pandit Sukhalalji is one of the great Indian authors and thinkers : he has enriched contemporary learning and thought by his manifold writings in Hindi and Gujarati. If some of us do not know him, it is because our study and reading, nowadays, do not go beyond our specialised branches of learning and favourite languages : that is a hurdle which we must cross and understand and appreciate a writer like Pandit Sukhalalji who has rendered a progressive, purposeful and fruitful contribution to the wealth of human thought. The personality of Pandit Sukhalalji has manifold aspects. Those who have met him know that he has lost his eyesight at an early age. His figure is frail; and left to himslef, he would not catch the attention of anybody. But, if one gets an opportunity to discuss any serious topic with him, one will come to know within a few minutes that behind his frail figure there is a mighty spirit full of power, founded on extensive learning and equipped with an all round vision of multitudinous problems about life and literature. Pandit Sukhalalji's physical disability going with an outstanding scholarship and abiding literary output reminds me of that great English poet, John Milton. What Panditji really is, is not easily indicated from what he appears to be at the first sight. He is a gem of great lustre and value, but it is a matter of surprise that they are concealed behind a simple appearance. By his age Panditji belongs to the last generation; but by his vision and thoughts he not only lives in the living present but he is also ahead of his times. Those who have steadily read his articles and studied his works know

________________ that by his education, obviously of the traditional type, he is a Naiyayika (theologian-logician ), a Vaijakarana ( grammarian), a Darsanika ( philosopher) and a Dharmajna (religious expert), as far as his basic equipments go. But his format is something different from the hackneyed type. His studies of Nyaya and Darsana works like the Sanmatitarka, Pramana-mimamsa, Jnanabindu, Hetubindu and Tattvopaplavasimha clearly indicate that his equipments and consequent discussions have something characteristic about them. Nowadays the terms Indian' and * Bharatiya' are very often used but with a limited import. There are many writers who talk of Indian philosophy, but basically they do not go beyond the Vedanta of one school or the other, Whenever Panditji writes on any topic, it may be the theory of knowledge, the path of Yoga or the means of liberation, one finds in his writings a comprehensive study and a cosmopolitan outlook; and the material from the Brahmanic, Buddhist and Jaina systems of thought is ably marshalled and relevently focussed with a view to elucidate a certain topic. The keen intellect of Panditji pierces to the very core of signification behind the varied terminology employed in different systems of Indian thought. In our land there are few Pandits who have such a vision as is evidenced by the writings of Pandit Sukhalalji. It has become customary with our Pandits to find weak points in other systems than the one which they stand for and then criticise them with all the vehemence at their command. But Pandit Sukhalalji generally adopts the Anekanta mode of thinking and arguing, and he is an exception. As a Darsanika he finds in different religions a common ground which is conducive to the welfare of humanity. He worthily represents the line of great Indian Darsanikas like Samantabhadra, Siddhasena, Haribhadra and Hemachandra. Panditji possesses an insatiable thirst for knowledge and is out for an earnest search for Truth. 1

________________ Pandit Sukhalalji is one of the living authorities on Jainism. His studies in Jainism are all along carried on in the broad perspective of the Indian pattern of thought and learning. His exposition of the Sanmati-tarka and the Tattvartha-sutra, his studies in the Jaina Karma doctrine, his elucidation of Yoga, his appraisal of the personalities of Vrsabha and. Mabavira are solid contributions towards a sympathetic understanding of Jainism. Howsoever difficult a subject might be, in the hands of Pt. Sukhalalji its exposition becomes lively and thought-provoking. His interpretations of the Stutis of Siddhasena and of the Adhyardha-sataka of Matscheta clearly show that here is a scholar who can put himself at the point of view of the author himself and try to understand the circumstantial setting and the world of thought and learning which were responsible for the niental make-up and literary expressions of the author. Panditji has a typical method of study of his own. The realm of knowledge for him recognises no religious, racial, temporal and geographical barriers; and the human thought-process, as he understands it, is a continuous and connected flow. Naturally, unlike most of the Pandits, with whom he shares a thorough grounding in traditional learning, he brings to bear upon his studies the modern instruments of the historical and comparative method of study. This endows the writings of Panditji with an abiding and universal appeal. Pandit Sukhalalji has contributed a number of papers on religion and its effect on society. Religion for him is not a time-worn instrument only to be worshipped, but he wants it to be a living force to be employed for the amelioration of the society as a whole. He has never hesitated to explode the myths of credulity and exploitation in one form or the other. He would always insist upon the basic in the Religion, but not hesitate to allow the 22

________________ amplifications to fall in line with the progressive forces of the present-day times. The thoughts of Pandit Sukhalalji in this respect deserve special attention from all serious thinkers of religious values and social progress. There is something characteristic about the style of Panditji, whether he writes in Hindi or Gujarati. There is a simplicity: it is like himself : simple in expression but pregnant with signification. There is precision, and there is a pointed appeal in all that he writes. His Gujarati style reminds me of the chaste and simple expression in which Mahatmaji wrote his Atmakatha. Unlike Mahatmaji, Panditji is really a Pandit by traditional learning and training but when he writes on any social topic, his thoughts and expressions run very parallel to those of Mahatmaji; and one has to admit that these two great men, though working in different fields, have forcefully strengthened the Gujarati expression and style in this century. Their names will be remembered as successful moulders of Gujarati language as a vehicle of higher thoughts. If Pandit Sukhalalji meant, he conld have loaded his Gujarati expression with high sounding Sanskrit words, as was done by some contemporary writers in Maharastra; but he is a cosmopolitan by his Anekanta method of study : he has never written just for a handful of intellects but always addressed a wider society in a simple language with a view to make his thoughts as widely appealing and popular as possible. Panditji has a dynamic personality: not only is he an embodiment of simple living and high thinking, but he sheds round him an effulgent reflection of his mode of living and of his height of thinking. It is a pleasure to differ from him. When Panditji finds that there are basic differences, he lays them bare with searching arguments, with appealing illustrations and with humorous anacdotes; and then with a fund of worldly wisdom, with a sense of

________________ fairness and justice and in a pursuasive tone he argues out the entire situation. And when you leave Panditji, after such a treat, you find that you have returned definitely. viser and soberer. Panditji is a light of learning which enkindles your thinking power: wherever he stays, he creates round him atmosphere of study and progressive thinking. The enormous literary output which we owe to Pandit Sukhalalji is an outcome of extensive study and intensive thinking. Whatever subject he takes up for study, he invests it with originality of thought and cosmopolitan outlook. His expositions of Ahimsa and Anekanta are at once unique, and they present an essence of his deep learning. ________________ Pandit Sukhlal Sanghavi An Appreciation Manamalopadhyaya Vidhusekhara Sastri Pandit Shri Sukhlalji Sanghavi is one of the greatest Sanskrit scholars in India, of whom everyone should feel proud not only in this country but also abroad. He was born in 1880 A. D. at Limbli near Wadhwan (Kathiawad). His education began, as usual, in a school in which he read only Gujarati up to the 7th class. Unfortunately, however, owing to a virulent type of small-pox he lost his eyes being completely blind at the age of sixteen. But nobody then could have the remotest idea that this boy was destined to become a great Sanskrit savant in our country. Indeed, though he was deprived of his Marnsa-Chakshus fleshy eye', he was destined to be a Prajna-Chakshus 'having the eyes of wisdom' of the highest class. In fact, his real education began after his unfortunate blindness, when he had to depend completely on his reader. From the very beginning he had a genuine love for Sanskrit and Philosophy. From Kathiavad he came to Benares. There he studied Nyaya under the late Mm. Pandit Vamacharania Bhattacharya whom I am proud to call a satirtha (fellowstudent) of mine under the late Mm. Pandit Kailasachandra Bhattacharya. For his study he had to travel also to Mithila where he read under several teachers, the most prominent of whom was Mm. Pandit Balakrishna Mishra. Here a short event in his life happend which for its interestingness may be recounted. His pecuniary condition was not good, and it is well-known how a Sanskrit student lives in the house of his teacher. He had a sweater on his body which his poor Sanskrit teacher saw and praised. Pandit Sukhlalji offered it to him next day without thinking as to how he could pass the severe winter of Mithila, And what he did ? He passed the cold nights spreading over 74

________________ him a few bundles of straw covering them with a worn-out rug. In his student life he did not take more than Rupees 2 or 3 a month for his board. Such was his vow. From Mithila he came back to Benares, and here for some years he studied different branches of Sanskrit philosophy and literature for which he devoted all his time day and night, and thus acquired a comprehensive knowledge of Sanskrit literature as a whole, mastering most difficult works in it. By religion he is a Jaina, and naturally he studied Jaina Sanskrit and Prakrit literatures embracing all their different branches. On Jainism there is none who can be considered his rival. From Benares he came back to Gujarat. But before coming there he had passed some time in Agra being engaged in editing, with Hindi translation and annotation as well as his own valuable introductions, some highly interesting religious and philosophical books, such as. Pancha-Pratikramana, the first four Karma-Granthas, Yogadarsana and Yogavimsika. In Gujarat, he was appointed a professor of Indian Philosophy in the Puratattvamandira of the Gujarat Vidyapitha or the National University established by Mahatma Gandhi. The specially notable work he was engaged in there was the edition of big work covering not less than 900 pages with various valuable and useful indices and appendices of Abhayadeva's commentary on the Sanmatitarka of Siddhasena Divakara, the first author of Logic in Jainism. Here it should be mentioned that Pandit Sukhlalji in this great work was assisted by Pandit Bechardas Doshi of Gujarat, a renowned Sanskrit and Prakrit scholar and author. This work is in five volumes and not less than ten years he devoted in editing this. As already stated he is a blind man, and it is surprising to note that he undertook the work and finished it very creditably with his learned and precious notes showing his profound scholarship in every line. ________________ note as to how a blind man as he was could edit such a book just as can reasonably be expected from a modern scholar conversant with scientific method of editing. He sits in his study surrounded by a number of his pupils or co-workers each with a manuscript in hand and he asks each of them to read out the variants one after another, he himself thinking over them deeply in order to choose the best reading that can be put in the body, other readings being relegated to the foot-notes. In editing the book he has done the most valuable and at the same time difficult work. In this work he had to work and labour day and night and so he was obliged to take perfect rest for some time. As a Naisthika Brahmacharin (a life-long celibate' as he is ) his necessities of life are naturally very few and he does not care to earn much, being satisfied as an ideal scholar with whatever he earns. From his honorarium or remuneration he maintains one or two assistants to help him in his work. From Gujarat he came to Benares Hindu University in 1933, being appointed there as the Professor of Jain Philosophy and retired voluntarily from service in 1944. During this time he wrote and edited a number of valuable works in Sanskrit, Hindi and Gujarati. His commentary and translation work both in Gujarati and Hindi of the Tattvarthasutra, which is widely studied in Jainism, by Umasvati who is considered to have been the first Sanskrit writer in Jainism, are most important for those who desire to understand the real significance of the text in clear and lucid language elucidating all the knotty points in the work. The introductions to his editions of the Jnanabindu and Pramanamimasa are real contributions to Sanskrit logical works. His elaborate commentary in Gujarati on the Sanmatitarka already referred to can be written only by a man of his calibre.

________________ * His edition of Pattvopaplayasiamha of Jayarasi Bhatta in the Gaekwad's Oriental Series deserves to be specially mentioned as it is the systematic work from the Charvaka point of view refuting all the different Indian philosophical systems. The Hetubindu is one of the most valuable works on Buddhist logic by Dharmkirti and there is a commentary on it by Archata. There are Tibetan translations of these two works, The Sanskrit of this tika is being edited by Panditji in the G. O. S. and this edition will contain also the sub-tika of Durveka Misra on it. The manuscript of the sub-tika was secured from some photographs taken by Mahapandita Rahula Sankrityayana in Tibet, which are preserved in the Bihar and Orissa Research Society. Pandit Sukhlalji is respected in learned society not only as a profound Sanskrit scholar but also as a man of character. He is free from all sorts of dogmatism of sectarianism. His thoughts are not bound by any narrowness as he always is used to view things in historical perspective following strictly pure reason and rationalism. It is for this that he is respected much more among the non-Jainas than by his orthodox co-religionists. For his liberal views he is sometimes called by them as a heretic even in abusive words. But as a true scholar he is not moved by it. For instance, one of his latest monograms entitled NirgranthaSampradaya is Hindi may be referred to. It deals with the customs and practices of Jaina monks giving comparative views as found in ancient Buddhist and Brahman works. Among other things he has discussed here the practice of meat-eating among the Jaina monks. Being himself a Jaina certainly it is no mean courage to assert that the Jaina monks once used to take meat in exceptional cases. It may be mentioned en passant that in this respect the only parallel to Panditji is Muni Jinavijayaji, a prominent figure in Gujarat and Bombay. in connection with the organisation of educational institutions,

________________ I can in no way conclude this brief appreciation without mentioning one thing which I consider to be the most outstanding trait of his character. He does not pay so much heed even to his studies as to the thoughts of the all-round well-being of his pupils. He is not satisfied with the superficial knowledge of his students, but always insists on their acquiring thoroughness of the subject, himself helping them as far as possible in every way, even arranging for pecuniary help. Pandit Sukhlalji is not a Sadhu formally renouncing the world, but truly speaking he is a real Sadhu. He has no home to live in. Our scholars, thinkers and philosophers, who have been nurtured in the ageold tradition of India, are still living examples of what India has aspired to achieve in the past, It is undesirable that the majority of the scholars of the indigenous tradition have failed to reach the standard required. But of the very few who still embody the ideal in their character and achievements, Pandit Sukhalalji is an outstanding representative. I wish to stress some of the traits in his character as a man and as a scholar, which mark him out from the majority and place him in a class apart. Fortunately for us, even in these degenerate days, Panditji has a few companions, and fellow-members who together with him form an illustrious band. His stupendous scholarship is too obvious. His learned editions of philosophical classics, his selections of correct readings from the mess of scribes' errors, his illuminating comments and annotations are unmistakable proofs of his mastery of the philosophical technique of the different schools of Indian thought. It is an object of admiration to scholars. Pandit Sukhalalji has set an example of learning and scholarship and insight, which is difficult to emulate. In precision of thought and speech, in the grasp of fundamentals, and in mastery of details, in the discrimination of subtle nuances of thought and expression which are apt to elude the grasp of even a careful scholar, Pandit Sukhalalji stands in the front rank. I do not know of many who can compete with him in these matters. What, however, distinguishes him is his extensive grasp of the cultural background lying behind the different apochs of upheavals of thought. He has before his mind's eye a

________________ clear picture of the milieu of Vedic, Upanisadic, the Buddhistic, the Jainistic and the later philosophical development, and his elucidation of the logical and psychological interrelations among these types of culture, almost compels acquiescence. What, further, has roused my admiration is his discovery of the unity in the midst of apparantly irreconcilable diversity in India's thought-movement in the past. He also has discovered for us the etimology of the diverse courses of thought. His long introductions to his editions are each a thesis, which can entitle a scholar to the highest doctorate degree of my University. They amply testify to his historical insight, which is born of objective knowledge and correct apprasal of India's thought-movements. The professional historian, who takes pride in the chronological data, should do well if he calmly studies the interconnexions of the thought-life of India in the past as has been unfolded by Panditji Real history of India can be written only by those who can understand the inner life of a people. Mere chronicle of external events is more often than not calculated to give a misleading picture. I hope and trust that the future historian of India will not shirk the labour involved in the task, and the learned contributions of Panditji will show him the way. I cannot decide what is the strongest point in Panditji's scholarship. His mastery of the abstruse arguments of Nyaya and Mimamsa is on a par with that of Buddhist and Jaina philosophy. It is difficult for me to accord the palm of superiority to this or that side. His written contributions do not represent a fragment of his learning. His knowledge of Sanskrit grammer, poetics, and bellesletires has not had an opportunity for self-expression. Here the man is uncomparably greater than what his recorded contributions show. He is really versatile scholar, and his versatility is all the more astounding because of the thoroughness and depth of knowledge of the specialist in each

________________ branch, India ought to be proud of such a man with such a capacious intellect. I am afraid that in this attempt at the assessment of his erudition and scholarship, I have not been able to do a particle of justice to the sayant. As a man he is unique. I feel puzzled when I try to compare his intellectual greatness with his moral elevation, He does not hanker after celebrity. He successfully parries all attempts of his admirers to express their appreciation of his merits. Personal honour does not appeal to him. Nobody can hope to win him by flattery, even when it is based upon genuine recognition of his worth. What he wants is the triumph of truth and love of knowledge. If a man is to be known by the company he keeps, a scholar is to be judged by the students, he has trained. Meet any student of Pandit Sukhalalji and test him and you will invariably find in him a disinterested love of knowledge. I have known from personal experience that his students are indifferent to worldly prospects and are imbued with a passion for knowledge. Such an achivement of success will not be eacily believed in the present day academic circles. Panditji loves a life of voluntary poverty. Being a lifelong bachelor, and leading a scrupulously celibate life, he has narrowed down his material needs to the minimum limit, He fails to understand why a scholar should covet money and material passessions. Sometimes his standard appears to us as too exacting. But it has conferred an inestimable privilege upon him, viz., immunity from humouring the rich, or the man in power. I wish that we could approximate to his standard even from a respectable distance. Pt. Sukhalalji is an outspoken man. No false courtesy or sense of etiquette deters him from speaking a truth, because it may not please a rich man or an ambitious scholar who wants to win cheap-laurels. Naturally, rich man who are accustomed to approval of all their acts and fads and also easy-going scholars, scrupulously avoid him from a

________________ distance. He will on no account lower his standard. He insists on thorough knowledge of Sanskrit and thorough study of texts in his students. He does not believe in the gathering of references, and quotations, without study of the texts in which they occur, which is regrettably the fashion among cheap researchers of our time. As a thinker he is absolutely independent. His allegiance is always to truth, and never to a fashionable opinion. He holds brief for none and does not hesitate to champion the cause which he thinks, stands for justice and truth. He will not flatter even men of his own community by praising their system and customs beyond their due. He will not denounce other schools simply because they uphold views different from those championed by Jaina philosophers. Pt. Sukhalalji is not only in the habit of not humouring the rich but also is not afraid of criticising the custodians of Jaina faith for any remissness in their conduct or their failure to live up to the standard. It is not a matter of surprise, therefore, that neither the Jaina community nor the academic bodies have come forward to honour him in public. We know that Panditji is far above the weakness of average academic men of our class, who have a real liking for the appreciation of their scholarship. But whatever may be the attitude of the scholar himself, no excuse can exempt us from the charge of dereliction of duty, that we have failed to show our recognition of the services of a savant, to whom the immortal gratitude of the Jaina community and of the students of Indian thought is due. must congratulate the authorities of the Jaina Ashram of Banaras Hindu University on the wisdom, though belated, for a public demonstration of their appreciation of this unostentatious scholar of whom the whole of India should be proud. Had he been born in the time of Vikramaditya, or of Bhojaraja, nothing would have been withheld from him. It is better that we have turned the corner and let us hope that this is rather a beginning 23

________________ and not the end. It behoves all those who are interested in Jainology to perpetuate his memory in a fitting fashion. I may suggest one or two measures in this direction. We should endow a chair in his name in the Banaras Hindu University and should found a college bearing his sacred name. We ought to erect a statue in his honour. By these measures we can show that the present generation is capable of honouring a scholar equally with our political heroes. I know that these things are superfluous, so far as Panditji is personally concerned. He has made himself immortal by his contributions. But unless and untill we do something grand and stupendous conformably to his prodigious scholarship, we shall not be able to escape the censure from posterity of being dubbed as a generation of philistines.
