4. NANDI
Nomenclature
The title of this Agama is Nandi which means 'bliss'. The author of the Carni has given three meanings of the word? viz. pleasure (pramoda), joy (harşa), and passion of love (kandarpa). Knowledge is the bliss par excellence. In this Agama, knowledge is described, and this is the reason why it is called Nandi. In the Visesavasyaku Bhășya knowledge is identified as bhävamangala and bhāvanandi? Knowledge is the best of all the auspicious activities and bence the designation of jñana as Nandi is a right estimation of knowledge. Date of Composition and Recitation (at Council)
The history of the Council is closely bound up with the composition of this sútra. In the Cūrņi of Nandi the Council held by Skandilācārya at Mathura, called Mathuri Vacană is mentioned. The Anuyoga of Skandilācārya was prevalent in the major part of the land of the Bhärata.
The author of the Cūrni had raised the question about the reason of the prevalence of the Skandilācārya's Anuyoga. He offers the solution by referring to a twelve-year terrible famine that was responsible for the suspension of scriptural study, deliberation and ponderance by the monastic order due to non-availability of the basic needs of life including food As a result the scripture was lost. There was a grand assembly of the monastic order at Mathura after the period of twelve years, when plenitude returned. Skandilācārya was the chief of the Council. The kalika-śruta (angapravişța śruta) was constituted by compiling the śruta that was retained in the memory of the learned monks among the order that assembled there. This compilation is called Council (vācană). This Council was held at Mathura, and is known as the Mathuri vācana. It was held under the leadership
