Besides the Jains have made no insignificant contribution to the development of astronomy as well as astrology. It can be safely said that no subject of basic science or humanities is left without discussion in the Jain literature.
Social Sciences
The Jain way of life prescribed for the monks is such that they together with the practice of asceticism, contribute to the weal and welfare of the society.
The reason why Mahavira gave his discourses in Prakrit, the language of the masses, is obviously that he wanted maximum people to be benefited by his religion. The rule that the Jain monks and nuns always travel on foot has also helped the Jain ascetics in having mass contacts with people. The Jain ascetics have taken upon themselves to uplift the ethical and spiritual standards of people living in social life.
A modern form of this mode of mass preaching is found in the Anuvrat Movement, sponsored by the famous Jain saint of our age Acharya Shri Tulsi, This movement has earned a nationwide repute because of its non-sectarian character. It can be said that the Jains' contribution to Independent India in the form of the Anuvrat Movement is one of remarkable importance in the field of socio-religious development of Indian people.
Relevance in Modern Age
It was on the basis of principles that Bhagwan Mahavira raised his voice against :
1. Performance of sacrifices (Yajna) involving killing of animals. 2. Şlave system. :3. Caste system. 4. Barring of women from religious practices, and many other inhuman
and unjustifixable social and religious practices.
