In the Prabandhacintamani, pp. 195-197 Kumarapala's battles with his rebellions' counsellors are described; on pp. 197-199 the campaign against Argoraja and the rewarding of his benefactors; on pp. 200- 201 the adventures of the singer Sollaka ; on pp. 201-203 the war against Mallikārjuna and his fall; on pp. 203-206 Hemacandra's introduction to Kumārapāla's court and the events immediately following it; on pp. 207-217 the building of the temple of Siva Somanatha, the pilgrimage to Devapattana and the conversion of the king. Udayana's nesount of Hemacandra's youth is pushed into the latter tale on pp. 207-211, see above page 7. The verses which Hemacandra is supposed to have composed in honour of S'iva, read on p. 213 as follows:
यत्र तत्र समये यथा तथा योसि सोस्यभिधया यया तया । वीतदोषकलुषः स चेद् भवान्
एक एव भगवन् नमोस्तु ते ॥ १ ॥

भवबीजारजना रागाथा: क्षयमुपागता यस्य । ब्रह्मा या विष्णु महेश्वरो वा नमस्तस्मै ॥ २ ॥
They are the same as were composed, according to the Prabhavakacaritra, when Hemacandra visited the placs of pilgrimage, Devapattana, with Siddharaja. The question as to whether they are authentic, is difficult to decide. However, it is quite possible that, on some occasion or other, Hemacandra consented, in order to please one of his Sivaite patrons, to sing in praise of Siva in so curious a fashion, and with a double meaning.

अथ कर्णावत्याः श्रीमाचावी: श्रीकुमारस्य राज्यातिं श्रुत्वा उदयनमत्रिकृतप्रवेशोत्सवाः पराने प्रापुः । पृष्टो मनी । राजास्माकं स्मरति न देति मनिनोकम् नेति ततः कदाचित्सूरिभिरूचे मन्त्रिन् एवं भूपं या रहः अद्य त्वचा नं. राहा । मन्त्रिणोक्तम् । । गृहे नैव सम्यम् (sic) रात्रौ सोपसर्गत्वात् केोतमिति पृच्छेत् तदात्याग्रहे मन्नाम वाच्यम् । ततो मन्त्रिणा तथोक्ते राशा च तथा कृते निशि विद्युत्पातात्तस्मिन् गृहे दग्धे राज्यां च मृतायां चमत्कृतो राजा जगाद सादरम् । मन्त्रिन् कस्येदमनागतज्ञानं महत्परोपकारित्वं च । ततो राज्ञोतिनिर्बन्धे मन्त्रिणा श्रीगुरुणां आगमनमूचे प्रमुदितो नृपन्तान् आकारयामास सदसि । सुरीन् दृष्ट्रासनादुत्थाय वन्दित्वा प्राञ्जलिरुवाच भगवन् अहं निजासामपि दर्शयितुं नालं तत्रभवताम् । तदा च स्तम्भतीयें रक्षितो भाविराज्यसमयचिटिका चार्पिता । परमहं प्राप्तराज्योपि नस्मा युष्माकं निष्कारणप्रथमोपकारिणाम् । कथंचनाप्यहं नानृणो भवामि । सूरिभिरुचे कथमित्यं विकत्थसे त्वमात्मानं सुधा राजन् उपकारक्षणो यत्ते संप्रति समागतोति । ततो राजाह । भगवन् पूर्वप्रतिश्रुतमिदं राज्यं गृहीत्वा मामनुगृहाण । ततः सूरिः प्रोवाच राजन् निरसङ्गानामखाकं राज्येन [[किम्]। चेद् भूपत्वं प्रत्युपचिकीरसि आत्मगीते (?) तदा जनधर्मे हि निजं मनः । ततो राजाह भवदुक्तं करिष्येहं सर्वमेव शनैः शनैः । कामयेह परं स निचेरिव तच प्रभो (1) ॥ अतो भवद्भिरिह प्रत्यहं समागम्यं प्रसच एवमङ्गीकृत्य यथाप्रस्तावं च सभायामागत्य धर्ममर्मान्त राणि सूरिराख्यातवान् ॥ ७

63. Kumirapalacarita, pp. 88-137. It may also be mentioned that Jinamanujans does not disdain the report of the Prabhavakacaritra about Kumarapala's 12 years' war with Arnoraja and the defent of the latter through the merey of Ajitanaitha. He inserts it later on pp. 232 ff without any connection.
64. J. Tod, Travels in Western India, p. 504. No. V.-The extract given there is quite unreliable. The partial translation by Forbes, Journ. Bo. Br. R. A. Soc vol. VIII, pp. 58-59, is better. An edition of the important inscriptions by Mr. Vajeshankar G. Ozhá appeared in Wiener Zeitschr. f. die Kunde des Morgenlandes, vol. III. pp. 1. ff. The verse in question reads:
