________________ 85 Jayasithha's hatred towards Kumärapals, in the Duyanaya. The story, too, of Kumärapala's fight and wanderings only occurs in the Prabhavaklearitra, in Merutuhgs and in later Prabandhakaras, However, there is, in favour of the correctness of this narrative, a verse of the Mokarājaparajaya (Kielhorn, Report 1880/81, p. 34), where we read: "To whom is this prince of the Gurjaras, the banner of the Caulukya-race, not known, he who through curiosity wandered alone through the whole world?" etc. Here we have a distinct reference to Kumarapala's wanderings. As Yasaḥpala wrote in Ajayapala's reign immediately after Kumarapala's death, his testimony has great value. Kumarapala's coronation took place certainly in the Vikrama-year 1199, as the Prabandhaassert an Hemacandra (see below, Note 66) gives a similar statement in the Mahaviracarita. The oldest inseription of his raign is that of Matigrol-Matigalapura, which is dated in the your 1202, Bhāmager Prieta Sallengraha, pp. 1-10. The day of the event is, according to Merutunga's Vicdras'ropi, Margasira sudi 4, bat according to the Prabandhanintamani of the same author, p. 194, it is Karttika vadi 2, Sunday under the Nakeates Hasta, Jinamaydana, Kumarapalasarila pp. 58 and 83, names Margas less sudi 4, Sunday, 56. Prabhāsalaearitra XXII, 356 417. 57. Prabandhacindimasi, pp. 192-196. 58. Kumārapālacarita, pp. 44–54. The sermon, adorned with many allogod quotations from the Brahmanical literature, is given in full. 59. Kumārapidesrita, pp. 58-83. The meeting of Hemacandra and Udayans is described on pp. 66-70. 60. Prabhavakacaritra XXII, 417-595. The extract is very much lengthened by the insertion of several, mostly irrelevant, tales. In his first speech to the king, 429-456, Vagbhata weaves in the story of the death of his father Udayana, who accompanied Kumarapala's brother Kirtipala on a campaign against Navaghana, the king of Sauristra, and fell in battle. Then the last compaign against Armorja, and the decisive battle ars very fully described and the description is much lengthened by the story of an attack tried by Vikramasimha, the Paramara king of Candravati and Abu against Kumarapala. The passage refering to Hemacandra's call, and to the conversion of Kumarapala is as follows: Jain Education International अम्बेर्वाग्भटामाखं धर्मात्यन्तकवासनः । For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
