________________ INTRODUCTION IN 59 Kșamākalyāna' wrote his work in Samvat 1839, i. e., in 1782 A, D. as is clear from the following colophon to his work: वर्षे नन्दकृशानुसिद्धिवसुधासंख्ये नभस्ये सिते पक्षे पावनपञ्चमीसुदिवसे श्रीजेसलाद्रौ पुरे । 10. There is, at the Bhandarkar Institute one more MS. of the Yaśodharacarita, No. 804 of 1892-95. A few pages at the beginning are missing and the colophon also does not mention the name of the author. The work, however, is divided into four cantos, and the MS. is dated Samvat 1581, i. e., 1524 A. D. Besides these writers in Sanskrit on Yasodharacarita whose works I could examine at the Bhandarkar Institute, the following are mentioned in Rai Bahadur Hiralal's Catalogue: 11. Mallibhūşana, No 7788. 12. Brahmanemidatta, No. 7800. 13. Śrutaságara, No. 7804. Is he the same as the commentator on Somadeva's Yaśastilaka ? 14. Padmanātha, No 7805, probably the same as Padmanabha above. The Jaina Granthāvali adds one more name to the list :15. Hemakuñjara, whose work consists of 370 ślokas only. The following writers, presumably in Sanskrit, on the theme are referred to in works already examined : 16. Prabhañjana, mentioned by Vása vasena. 17. Harişena, mentioned by Vásavasena. 18. Vatsarāja, referred to by Gandharva in passages added to Pușpadanta's work. The following writers wrote on the theme in Prakrit and Apabhramśa respectively 19. Haribhadra, on the authority of Kșamākalyāpa and Mánikyasuri. 20. Puşpadanta, the author of the present work. Besides these I have discovered the names of the following writers in vernaculars on the theme : 21. Janna composed his Yasodharacarita in Kannada in 1209 A. D., in the reign of Vira Balla! ( 1173-1220 A.D.). His work is in prose and verse and is divided into four avatāras. In the introductory portion of his work he says that the story was already narrated in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Kannada by former poets. (See karnāțaka-kavi-carite, Vol. I, by R. B. R. Narasimhācārya ). 22. Lakhmidāsa or Pandit Lakhmidāsa wrote a Yaśodharacarita in Hindi, of which there is a copy at the Bhandarkar Institute and bears No. 681 of 1895-98. The Pandit says' that he wrote the work after the model of Padmanabha in the year 1781 of the Vikrama era, i. e., in 1724 A. D. 23. Jinacandrasūri of Kharatara Gaccha wrote a Yaśodharacarita in old Gujarati, a MS. of which, No 1489 of 1887-91, is deposited at the Bhandarkar Institute. I think he belongs to 16th century. 24. Devendra composed in old Gujarati a Yaśodhararāsa, a MS, of which, No. 1468 of 1886-92, is deposited at the Bhandarkar Institute.
