________________ 10 based on the denial of the soul in man, and therefore the end of human existence is not the spiritual development of individual man hut the corporate development of the human society as a whole. It places man on the same footing as the gregarious insects like bees and ants, ignoring the vital fact that man is endowed with self-consciousness which creates the sense of personality. The individual thus ceases to be a moral being gifted with a will of his own but becomes a servile instrument in the hands of interested and ambitious politicol authority in an artificial institution called the state. His Dharma is then the man-made law which is sustained by the policeman round the corner, and his only incentive is the fear of punishment in this world. His world is thus a world of fact shorn of all values that exalt and ennoble man in the animal kingdom. On the other hand the established religions of the world extol life in the next world and denounce that in this world as ephemeral and illusory. They, accordingly, preach obedienee to the will of God so that man may enjoy an honoured seat in heaven to sing eternally the
