________________ HEADQUARTER NEWS New Members JAINA is pleased to welcome four new Associate Members in Florida, Fort. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Tampa, and Portland. In addition, the Jain Social Group of Toronto has joined as an affiliate member. With these additions, JAINA has a membership of 52 centers. There are 12 other organizations which are regular members or affiliates. JAINA is an association of local associations and therefore represents Jain Communities in North America. We invite all Jains living in North America to join JAINA after organizing themselves as a center. We are happy to help in forming these centers. For more information please contact Jit Turakhia, Chair of the Membership Committee at 315/622-3287. JAINA Executive Committee in Los Angeles April, 1994. Executive Committee Meets in L.A. The JAINA Executive committee met in Los Angeles on April 1-2, 1994. The meeting was hosted by the Jain Center of Southern California. The meeting was attended by: Jagat Jain, Manibhai Mehta, Ramesh Jain, Niranjan Shah, Hansa Varia, Harilal Shah, Manoj Dharmasi, Dhiraj Shah, Narendra Shah, Narendra Sheth, Urmila Talsania, Prabodh Vaidya, Navin Shah, Jagdish Shah, Sonal Sheth, Samir Mehta, Maulin Shah, Tushar Shah, Poorvesh Sheth and Navalbhai Shah. June 1994 Jain Education International 2010_02 Town Hall Meeting Akash Shah The evening Town Hall style meeting in Los Angeles was very productive with a lively exchange of ideas, information, and viewpoints. The most striking moment of the meeting was when 7 year old, Akash Shah, who had been sitting silently through out the meeting, raised his hand to ask some questions concerning religious books for children. Everyone felt proud of Akash. One day he is going to make his mark in life. We hope to meet many more children like Akash in the future. JAINA Ratna Award and Recognitions Nominations are invited for the JAINA Ratna Award and Recognitions for outstanding contributions in promoting Jainism in North America. Nominations may be made on an individual or group basis. However to qualify as a group, the group should be a member of JAINA. All nominations must be post marked no later than December 31, 1994 to be considered eligible. The award recipients will be honored at the 8th JAINA Convention in Cherry Hill, NJ on July 14, 1995. JAIN DIGEST For Private & Personal Use Only To qualify for the award or a recognition the nominee must meet the following criteria: 1. A resident of U. S. A. or Canada. 2. A householder (Shravak-Shravika). 3. Follow Jain principles in belief and practice. 4. Contribute to promoting Jainism by: a) Publishing Articles. b) Lecturing. c) Teaching. d) Performing community servicefor example: fund raising, establishing Jain libraries, editing Jain magazines, coordinating essay competitions, organizing youth camps, etc. e) Organizing/coordinating visits of Jain scholars/monks in North America. f) Establishing/serving Jain organizations and/or organizing conferences locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. g) Participating in lectures, discussions and presentations. b) Promoting the Jain principle of caring for the needy in the community at-large, i) Establishing contacts between Jains of North America and the world. There is only one JAINA Ratna Award. However, there is no limit to the number of Recognitions. The Award and Recognition Committee members are continued on page 11. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Board of Directors and Executive Council of JAINA will be on October 1-2, 1994 at Siddhachalam. On October 2, 1994 cveryone present will also participate in Universal Forgiveness and Ahimsa Day Celebrations.
