' Viltkisana. The Payāgā must have represented
the confluence of the Gangā and Yamunā at Prayāga (Allahabad).1 The Ganga and Yamunā do not need much comment. The Bhāgirathi Gangā flowed through Pañchāla dividing it into Uttara (Northern) and Dakşiņa (Southern), Kampilla, the capital of the latter standing on its right bank. The Yamunā served as a . boundary between Sūrasena and Kosala and further down, between Vamsa (Vatsa) and Kobala, Madhura, the capital of Sūrasena and Kosambī, the capital of Vaņsa standing on its right bank. The Sarabhū is to be identified with the Sarayū in the Rāmāyana, on the left bank of which stood and still stands Ayodhyā, the ancient capital of Kośala (Uttara Košala). The Aciravati is modern Râpti on the right bank of which stood Sāvatthi (Śrāvasti), the third or last capital of Kosala. The Mabi (Mahāmahi Gangā) is a tributary of the Ganges; a river of this name is associated in the Mārkandeya Purāņa with the Pāripātra range. The Bāhumati, Doņa and Timbaru are still to be identified.
