The Puranas* say that Kapi, Kanva, Mudgala, Samkriti and Garga, all of them originally Kshatriyas, became Brâhmans and attached themselves to the family of Angiras.
The descendants of Samkriti are said to be Dvyâmushyâyaņas or persons belonging to two families, i, e., of Angiras and Vasishtha. It is probable that the descendants of Samkriti, when they became brâhmans, first became the followers of Angires and afterwards became the descendants of Vasishtha by Niyoga or procreation. They are not, therefore, allowed to intermarry with Vásishthas; but they can intermarry with the other descendants of Anç-iras, as they were not his real offspring.
