________________ The Pravara pronounced by the descendants of Vítahavya according to the various schools they follow :-- II. Vitahavya. Genealogy. * Marichi. Kasyapa, Vivasvat. Manu. Ikshvàku. Simi or Videla. Janaka. Sunaya, 1. Bhárgava, Vaitahavya, Sávedasa.† The following story is told about Vítahavya :“King Dirodasa was attacked by the sons of Vítahavya, a king, and all his family was slain · by them in battle. The afflicted monarch, Divo dâsa, thereupon resorted to the sage Bharadvája, who performed for him a sacrifice, in consequence of which a son named Pratardana was born to him. Pratardana, becoming an accomplished warrior, was sent by his father to take vengeance on the Vîtahavyas. Vítahavya was defeated in the battle and had to fly to another sage, Bhrigu, who promised him protection. The avenger Pratardana, followed him and demanded that the refugee should be delivered up. Bhrigu answered, There is no kshatriya here: all these are Bráhmans. Hearing this assertion of Bhrigu, Pratardana departed, while Vitahavya, by the mere word of Bhřigu, became a Bráhman-Kishi and an utterer of the Veda. I." A. Vitahavya. From this story it is clear ilat Vítahavya became a Bráhman and that his descendants pronounce the name of Bhrigu in tiieir Pravara because he became a Bráhman by the favor of Bhrigu. See Bhagavata IX Sk., Ist adhraya, SL. 8-12; and Vishnupurana IV anisa, 1-5 adhyayıs Savedasa is apparently a descendant of Vitahavya.
