*vide Váyu Purana Vol. II, 4th Adhyaya. According to Sarvinukramanì x, 98 and Nirukta II, 3-1, 2 Devápi, an author of
Vedic hymns, is identical with Arshtishena and is a son of Rishtishena. In Mahá. bharata, Salyaparva XL. 36-37, however, Devapi anl Santanu are said to be sons of Pratipa,a prince of Kuru-Race of Kshatriyas; and Nirukta al 30 says that they belonged to the same race. Moreover, Mahábhàrat: speaks of Arshtishena as quite a different person from Davapi and represents them both as authors of Vedic hymns. Devapi and Arshtishena spoken of in these places my, therefore, refer to the same person or pergons known by those names, though traditions, as recorded therein, betray some confusion. Again, Devapi the son of Pratipa, is saill (Harivamsa XXXII 105-109) to have been a fictitious(Kritrima)son of Chyavana. If Devapi and Arshtishena be identical, it is difficult to explain why, as all Sätrakâras agroe in stating, those who pronounca the Pravara No. 4 should not intermarry with the descendants of Jamadagni ; or why they are classed among the descendants of Jamadagni by Vibandhanakårag, such as Kesava-Daivajna ; or why they should pronounce the name of Apnavana in their Pravara. In deference to the authority of the Sutrakuras and Nibandhanakaras, Arshtishena may be considered as a descendant of Jamadagni, and Anupa of Arshtishena.
Though nothing is said elsewhere about the descent of Bida whos descendants pro
nounce this Pravara, he may be considereủ to be a descendant of Jamadagni, inasmuch as some of them who follow the Katyayana-Sutra pronounce the Prayara 2 given above, which includes the name of Jamadagni.
