XXVIII elsewhere that Uddyötakosarin, who ruled about 1060-85 A.C., possibly during the later part of his reign, made Abhimanyu, apparently & prince of his own family, a sub-king of that part of his dominions that lay in Kösala, while he himself ruled in Utkala where we have his records at Bhubangsvar and the neighbourhood. This arrangement may have been made to check the Kalachuri as well as Chhindaka-Naga and Telugu-Chöda encroachment in Kösala and Ganga encroachment in Utkala.. As to the extirpation of Sõmava isi rule (98pacially of Abhimanyu's reign) from Kõsale, it may be pointed out that the Chhindaka-Näga king Sõmēsvara (circa 1090-1110 A. C.) of Bastar and Yabõrāja I, a Telugu-Choda feudatary of the Chhindaka-Nāgas, claim to have conquered Kõsala. Yaböräja's great-grandson Sömēsvara II, called 'lord of the whole of Kõsala', actually issued his Kumārisimhāand Patna Museum plates from Suvarnapura. The position of Somosvara and Abhimanyu, mentioned in our record, in the gǝnealogy of the Sõmavamsis cannot be determined ; but the latter may have been a grandson of Abhimanyu (grandfather of Uddyotakēsarin) and a brother or cousin of Uddyotakësarin. Like the Telugu-Choda Sõmāśvara II who issued charters from Sonepur, tha Sõmsvamsi Sõmēšvara who issued the charter under discussion from the same city, seems to have flourished about the early years of the twelfth century. That the Somavamši Sömēsvara was a contemporary of his Telugu-Chōda namesake 'may be suggested by the influence of the latter's records on passages like Soma-kula-kımzla-kalikā-vikātabhaskara and fri-Somētvaradeva-pädāh kusalinah. In the Sõmavambi styla, the passages would have been Somakula-tilaka and fri-Somēsvaradevah kućali. It is possible to suggest that the $5msvamsi Bomēsvara of our record struggled with and was overthrown by the Telugu-Choda Sõmēsvara II. The greatest achievement of Kalachuri Jäjalladéva (1114 A. C.) is described as a victory over 4 certain Sõmēsvara in one record and as a victory over Bhujabala of Suvarnapura in another." This seems to suggest that Bhujabala or Bhujabalamalla was a viruda of Sömēsvara who was a ruler of Suvarnapura (Sonepur). This Sömēšvara, defeated by the Kalachuris established in the western part of South Kösala, may be either the Sõmevamsi Som svara of our record or the Telugu-Choda Sömēsvara II of the Kumārisimhā and Patna Museum plates. But his identification with the former seems preferable. From the record under review we learn that, like the imperial Gangas, the Sömavamáis claimed to have belonged to the Atrēya götra.
of the geographical names mentioned in the inscription, Kēsalögā and Suvarnapura are of course modern Kelgã and Sonepur respectively. The district called Uttaravalli seems to be what is now called Uttara-tira referred to above. The village of Attēndā must have stood in the vicinity of Kelgã. The donee's family hailed from the village of Mahuväli in Srāvasti which was the area round modern Set-Mahet on the borders of the Gonds and Bahraich Districts of the Uttar Pradesh, The village of Kamulapura, where the donee was settled, seems to have been a locality in South Kosala.
