________________ बुद्धिप्रभा ૪૪ ] Our piteous need, today, is men of manhood,--men who, casting out fear from their hearts, would serve this ancient land. The heroism of Mahavica was reflected in his life and his teaching. It was a life of singular selfconquest: and his teaching was the bold one :- -"Regard all creatures as thyself and harm по one!" In these words you have the double doctrine of Ahimsa, positive and negative. The positive refers to the vision of unity-See thyself in all. The negative grows out of it-Harm no one. To see the Self in all is to refrain from injury to anyone. Harmlessness grows our of the vision of the One in all. [ ता. १०-१०-१९६३ was thought foolish to treat "coloured" men as human beings! An Englishman in South Africa said the negro had no soul ! All life is sacred. So tear no leaf from its tree. crush no flower, harm no insect. Is it a foolish sentiment to treat insects, animals and birds with kindness? There was a time when it What is Ahimsa ? Harmony of my will-to-live with the others' will-to-live. Ahimsa is true "sacrifice,"profound surrender of myself for the sake of life in others. Ahimsa is non-criticism of others, is forgiveness: I must nor judge others, I must only judge myself. Ahimsa is shakti, true strength which makes no noise, no fuss. Ahimsa is seua (service). Do I hold property? It belongs to the community : it is with me as a trust for the service of society. Property may be given up or it may be increased, but in either case, it must be viewed mentally and used actually as belonging to the community. Often they who give up become egoistic.
